Volleyball Fires Past Fighting Scots in the Home Opener

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Tonight marked the home opener for John Carroll Volleyball for the 2023 season, with a nice home crowd in attendance.

The Blue Streaks took on the College of Wooster Fighting Scots and secured the win 3-1.

John Carroll came into the matchup at 2-2 on the season, while Wooster entered with a 2-1 record on a 2-game win streak. The freshmen for the home team showed up and showed out in their first appearance at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The Blue Streaks struck first winning the first point of the match, but the Fighting Scots won the next three. The two teams battled back and forth for the lead throughout the set, with JCU starting to pull away at the end of the match, winning 25-19. Leaders of the set included freshman Mary Kate Sheehan with 3 kills, along with Hailey Williams and Natalie Glowe adding critical digs to keep the Blue Streaks in the game.

In set two, the College of Wooster took the early lead, but the Blue Streaks quickly battled back to close the score gap, only for Wooster to widen it once again. JCU showed that they were not going down without a fight. The hosts battled back, but it was not enough. Senior Maddie Mariarz gave her best to keep JCU in the fight, setting up her teammates as well as adding an ace to the scorecard. Wooster maintained the lead throughout the set ending at 25-16, tying the game at one set a piece. Senior Caroline Dillard was a key to the Wooster offense on the night with 14 kills.

Set three started with another change in momentum with the Blue Streaks scoring first, but the Fighting Scots quickly answered back. Williams gave JCU the lead at 6-4 with incredible serves that resulted in a Wooster timeout. That did not slow JCU's roll in the set. Sheehan continued to bring the energy and critical plays to the Blue Streak side of the court. Senior Jennifer Follmer helped the Blue Streaks defensively with blocks to keep the pressure on the visiting team and helped the home team take the set, 25-15. Wooster senior Ty Thompson did her best to keep her team in the lead, but it was not enough to pull out the win on this set. Thompson ended the night with 8 kills.

The last set was neck and neck in the beginning, with an early score of 7-7. Natalie Glowe and senior Lexi MacDonald put JCU ahead with a string of good serves and reignited their spark. The Blue Streaks used that spark to hustle all across the floor and save balls that could have been dead in the water. Glowe finished out her nice night with the game-winning kill to finish out a 3-1 victory.

For the evening, Follmer topped the team in kills with 11, followed by Glowe with nine. Haley Nicholson provided a team-best 18 assists, with Lexi MacDonald (18), Glowe (14), and Maddie Maziarz (11) all hitting double-digits in digs.

"It was a great first home game win," said Follmer. "It was exciting to see everything we practiced come together. It is a great start to a successful season."

The Blue Streaks are back in action Friday, September 8 at the Saint John Fisher/Nazareth Tournament in Rochester, NY. They will play one game on Friday night and two more on Saturday.
