Strong Start to Second Half Keys Win for Women's Soccer over Wittenberg

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Under the lights of Don Shula Stadium for the first time this season, John Carroll Women's Soccer did not wilt.

Instead, the Blue Streaks stepped up in the second half, with a pair of goals to secure the program's first win of the campaign.

The Blue Streaks defeated the Wittenberg Tigers at home on Wednesday evening, 3-1, after firing on all cylinders in the second half.

With the conquest, the Blue Streaks advance to 1-1 early in the season. Several young players provided crucial plays throughout the contest to thwart a very good Wittenberg squad.

The opening minutes of the contest were relatively quiet. Wittenberg poked the JCU defense, but strong defense from the backfield kept the game tied.

It was not until the 14th minute where the Tigers got their first opportunity with a corner kick. Two shots fired in towards Koiser in rapid succession. Koiser saved the fist shot, but the second shot was too much, as Mackenzie Hessick was the first to put a point on the board for the Tigers.

The Blue Streaks did not take too long to respond, as the answer came in the 20th minute. A Wittenberg foul in the box drawn by Abby Smith gave the Blue Streaks a golden opportunity on a penalty kick. Madyson Rosado rocketed the PK low-left corner for the tying tally.

The Tigers came back flying with attempts. They had multiple corners and a couple shots on target. But the backline defense, led by Senior Captain Gabriella Walter, was able to hold down the fort.

The teams traded shots down the stretch, with Sara Gennuso providing the pressure on behalf of the Blue Streaks. But the teams remained deadlocked entering the break.

The Blue Streaks soared out of the break. Before the Tigers could catch their breath, John Carroll went on the attack. Rosado pressed forward and tried to pass it as she ran out of room near the endline. The ball bounced off a Wittenberg defender and flicked off the feet of Abby Smith. The ball bounded right to the middle of the box to Emma West, who beat the goalkeeper to the ball on a quick play. It was the sophomore's first goal of her JCU career.

John Carroll continued to press on offense, with a succession of shots over an eight-minute span. In the 73rd and 75th minutes, the teams traded yellow cards, as the action got a bit chippy. The 50/50 balls were closely contested, with JCU winning most of the action.

In the 79th minute, Luci Altieri brought the ball up the left side of the pitch. She sent in a beautiful cross towards the middle, initially looking intended for Rosado, but Rosado faked to allow the ball to keep rolling. Right in front, Abby Smith right-footed it into the right side of the net for the finisher.

The final ten minutes of the match were relatively quiet, despite a couple corners. The Blue Streaks wrapped the victory up with a nice bow for the 3-1 conquest.

"Working together as a team, moving the ball around, and keeping possession was really important for us in the first win of the season," said West. "And that's how we got the momentum rolling in the first place. We went for anything in the box. Two of the goals occurred by just going for the ball. This was a big win. It sends a message to other teams in our conference that we can compete and win at a high level."

Next up, the Blue Streaks travel to Gambier, Ohio to face Kenyon College this Saturday, September 9 at 1:30 pm.
