Volleyball Battles to Two Defeats in Alliance on Saturday

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Following a season-opening victory on Friday evening, the results did not favor the Blue Streaks on Saturday.

John Carroll Volleyball lost to two in Ohio Wesleyan and Albion to conclude the Mount Union Tournament in Alliance.

The Blue Streaks dropped the opening match to OWU by set scores of, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20. John Carroll battled harder in the next competition vs. Albion, but lost by scores of 14-25, 23-25, 25-23, 26-28.

Hailey Williams represented John Carroll for the All-Tournament Team after a strong weekend, with the freshman finishing with a stat line of 28 digs, 15 kills, and 6 service aces. Certainly not a bad debut for the Twinsburg native! Many more good things to come for Williams and what is shaping up to be a talented freshmen class.

JCU vs. Ohio Wesleyan
In the early goings, the contest was hotly contested, with John Carroll taking a narrow 8-7 lead. The teams traded 6-point runs, and then the teams traded jabs. Jennifer Follmer hit a kill for a 21-20 lead, but then the Battling Bishops caught fire down the stretch and won five of the last six points for the 25-22 opening victory.

The Blue Streaks got going to start the second set. Marissa Lynch tabbed a pair of kills to help the effort, pushing JCU ahead to 14-7. OWU chipped away at the lead to 16-14 before taking control down the stretch. The Battling Bishops fired up an 11-3 run down the stretch, as for the second straight set, OWU's attack looked strong.

The third set was quite even, as neither team gained much ground in the early going. The teams stood tied at 7 and then 13. But then OWU got on a big 9-point run to take full control. The Blue Streaks made it closer with a 5-point run to narrow the deficit to four, aided by a few OWU attack errors. But the Battling Bishops managed to put it away late to hand JCU its first loss of the season.

Mary Kate Sheehan tallied 7 kills to top the team, followed by Jessica Liddle with 6 kills. Maddie Maziarz led the way with 12 assists, adding 6 digs. Lexi MacDonald topped the team with 9 digs.

JCU vs. Albion
The Blue Streaks stumbled out of the gate in the second set, falling behind, 15-6. Follmer helped to spur on JCU's offense, but the Britons dominated the first set with a good finish for the opening victory.

Albion and John Carroll played evenly in the second set, splitting the first 26 points right down the middle. The Britons and Blue Streaks traded runs, with two kills by Kendra Dziubinski especially aiding the effort. JCU appeared to be in shape to even things at one set apiece, with a 23-21 lead. But then the Britons figured it out, and rolled off four straight points to steal the set.

The third set was the best of JCU's day. The offense found a rhythm in the early going, with kills by several players powering the effort. A 5-point Albion run partially deflated things, but then a 7-point roar from JCU, including two Natalie Glowe kills, firmly put JCU in the driver's seat at 21-14. Albion mounted a furious comeback, getting as close at 23-22, but a Follmer kill hammered home the final point for a JCU set three win.

The Blue Streaks positioned themselves well for another furious comeback like the one they pulled off yesterday. JCU got off to a good start at 8-4 before Albion evened it up at 10. Mary Kate Sheehan helped to spur JCU's effort at the midway point, but Albion refused to quit. The teams traded point for point in a thrilling back-and-forth affair late. After Glowe tied it at 26-26, Albion managed to come up with two points in a row, ending JCU's comeback.

Follmer finished as the team leader for kills with 16, followed up by Glowe with 13 and Sheehan with 10. Hailey Williams tallied 4 aces. Maddie Maziarz (23 assists) and Haley Nicholson (20 assists) split setting duties well. Ellie Schenk (17), Hailey Williams (15), and Maddie Maziarz (13) all did well in the backline in the digs category.

The seniors did a good deal of the heavy lifting, with the freshly minted senior captain trio helping to steer the ship.

After Labor Day, the Blue Streaks are immediately back in action. A trip to SUNY Fredonia is next on Tuesday at 6 pm. Following that is the home opener against The College of Wooster on Wednesday at 7 pm.
