Women's Soccer Powers Past Pitt-Greensburg to Start Busy Stretch

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Tonight began quite a busy stretch of matches for John Carroll Women's Soccer.

The Blue Streaks aced the first challenge of the slate, winning in dominant fashion.

John Carroll defeated the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg Bobcats, 3-1, at Don Shula Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Blue Streaks are now amidst a stretch with 4 games in 8 days, three of those matches at home. The schedule simulates the hectic pace of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, good prep for a team hoping to make noise in the postseason.

The most promising early chance occurred in the 11th minute. Emily Patrzyk created space and looked to score, but the goalkeeper held firm in front, grabbing the shot.

Pitt-Greensburg found a response in the 15th minute, as the Bobcats' Megan Hickey got a nice touch right outside the box and rocketed it in high. Meredith Martin Koiser leaped up, got a hand on the ball, deflecting it off the crossbar and away from twine.

Abby Smith tested the Bobcats with a couple shots in the 27th minute, but nothing came of it. Patrzyk and Madyson Rosado poked at the Bobcats' defense in the 31st minute, charging down the field with time and space. The visitors clamped down and thwarted the chance, but the Blue Streaks kept trying the hypothesis that a deep through ball could solve the strong Bobcat defense.

Following a wide Meredith Coloian shot in the 40th minute, the Blue Streaks kept revving up the offense. Lucy Altieri came off the bench for the last 12 minutes of the half, and tallied two promising shots on goal, the first being the most promising.

But despite JCU leading in shots, 10-3, and shots on goal, 5-1, the score stayed deadlocked. For a short time.

Just 27 seconds into the second half, the Blue Streaks broke through at last. Emily Patrzyk played the ball up to Altieri at about the 25-yard line. Altieri lofted it forward, grazing the head of Madyson Rosado. On the right side just in front of the net, Meredith Coloian boxed out the defender, won the touch, and tapped the ball into the low-left side of the net with her right foot.

Not satisfied with a mere 1-0 lead, the Blue Streaks continued to apply the pressure. Altieri and Coloian both forced the keeper to rebound quickly.

And in the 53rd minute, Emily Patrzyk decided to add a goal to the tallysheet with some hard work. From her defender spot, Gabriella Walter sent a ball high to Patrzyk, who headed it forward. The Twinsburg native charged forward, settled the ball, and hit a perfect laser with her right foot into the low left side of the net. John Carroll suddenly possessed a 2-0 advantage.

Even still, you wouldn't know it by the way the Blue Streaks continued to press the advantage. Altieri very nearly added the clincher with a marvelous chance, but the keeper got enough of the ball, and Alli Malinky tapped the rebound just high off left.

The Bobcats tabbed a shot in the 62nd minute, looking to respond. But the visitors would not be the ones to score next.

In the 66th minute, Gianna Merlo tapped the ball forward smartly into the JCU third, looking for Patrzyk. The talented sophomore did the trick once again, rocketing home a marvelous right-footed shot into the left corner of the net past the keeper for the 3-0 lead.

"The goals were a team effort," said Patrzyk. "It was never me dribbling in and out through people, there was always an assist from someone. And I just finished the opportunity when I was there. This is amazing, the team's confidence is super high right now. It's going to be better for the next three games."

The Bobcats did respond late in the affair. In the 84th minute, the Bobcats took off the clean sheet with an opportune goal made possible by some Pitt-Greensburg hustle.

But a comeback tonight was not in the cards, and the Blue Streaks remained unbeaten in their last four matches. With a 24-8 margin in shots and an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal, it's not a surprise to see JCU walk away with the win tonight. Limiting the Bobcats to three corner kicks and stopping those set pieces was also key, as Pitt-Greensburg entered as the top team in the AMCC with 4.43 cornerkicks per game.

The Blue & Gold will return to action on Thursday, hosting Oberlin at 7 pm at Don Shula Stadium, a reschedule from last Saturday due to a scheduling issue at Oberlin.
