An 8-Run Inning in Game 2 Propels JCU Softball to Split at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Blue Streaks traveled to Alliance today to take on rival Mount Union in a doubleheader with key conference standings implications in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

The two teams split the games with Mount taking the first and JCU taking the second. The Streaks dropped the first game 6-0, but bounced back to win the second 11-9.

Game 1
The first game started with a hit by sophomore Kaylyn Odelli, who singled to right and advanced to second on an error. Odelli was left stranded on second, unable to score. The Raiders went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first thanks to stellar defense by JCU.

The second inning gave Mount Union the start to their scoring with a run scored with two outs from a lead off double by sophomore Adri George. The Blue Streaks were able to hold them to one that inning.

All scoring for both sides stalled until the bottom of the fifth with Mount Union scoring two more to bring the score, 3-0. The next inning JCU went three up, three down, but Mount Union did not stop the scoring. The Purple Raiders added three more to their total for six for the game. Freshman Casey Cash came into the game to pitch the sixth inning for the Blue Streaks, but could not hold off the Raiders.

Serena Paterno and Kaylyn Odelli were the only Blue Streaks to get a hit in the first game. Danielle Orendi pitched a stellar five innings and held off the Mount Union offense the best she could.

Game 2
The second game started out with a bunt by freshman Bella Carcioppolo that successfully got her to first and then advanced to second where she was left stranded. Two more Blue Streaks were left stranded on base in the second inning.

The third inning started off the scoring for John Carroll. Carcioppolo started off the offense again for the Blue Streaks with a single to center field. Kaylyn Odelli singled up the left side to advance the runner. Mackenzie Stease reached on an error that advanced the other runners to fill the bases. The next at bat walked in a run and two more reached on a single to left center by Lexie Genovese, a sophomore from Kent, Ohio.

The Raiders scored four to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The next inning Mount Union added four more runs to make the score, 8-3. Danielle Orendi checked into the game in the fifth, stopped the bleeding, and riled up the Blue Streaks.

And so, the John Carroll bats showed no quit.

John Carroll caught fire in the sixth inning, scoring eight runs. The scoring started with Kendall Trunzo hitting a 2-run homerun. Another run scored on an RBI by Odelli. Gabby Hougan reached by being hit by a pitch, which advanced Odelli to second. Melissa Smith hit a single to left to score another run. JCU scored another four runs in the sixth inning, thanks to a Genovese RBI HBP, a 2-run Nina Scavelli single, and an RBI single by Kendall Trunzo. The Blue Streaks stood in command of the game, 11-8.

Mount Union plated a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning by Adri George to bring us to the final score of 11-9, with John Carroll winning the game thanks to some gutsy efforts.

Odelli led the Blue Streaks to victory with three hits and a run scored. Bella Carcioppolo scored two runs with two hits, and Mackenzie Stease also touched home twice to score for the Blue Streaks with two hits in three at bats.

Today's victory over JCU ends a 9-game winless streak in the series against Mount Union. The Blue Streaks' last victory over the Raiders before today occurred on April 18, 2018.

The Blue Streaks' softball team will be back in action on Friday with a double header at Marietta at 3 pm and 5 pm.
