Electric Offense Mixed With Stellar Defense Is Recipe For JCU’s Dominant Victory Over Marietta

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – A season-high 20 caused turnovers matched with 20 goals scored helped the John Carroll men's lacrosse team cook up a 20-3 victory over Marietta.

Spreading the ball around was a key ingredient, as seven players scored for the Blue Streaks, and 12 recorded at least a point.

JCU got the scoring started with four goals in the opening period, all of which came from different players.

Colin Morrissey tallied the first just 56 seconds into the game, while Matt Berdysiak, Morgan Morrell, and Alexander Sykas added scores of their own in the period.

The Blue & Gold tacked on seven more in the second, two of which each came from Morrell and Josh Lombardo, while Max Cook, Vinny Fiorella, and Berdysiak were the others who scored to aid an 11-0 JCU lead at the half. Berdysiak added his just 24 seconds into the quarter.

The Blue Streaks pitched a shutout until the 3:17 mark of the third, when Thomas Zerman scored for Marietta to make it 18-1 where it would remain until the end of the quarter.

Before that, Morrell had a hat trick in the period, while Berdysiak scored twice. Additionally, Morrissey and Fiorella both found the back of the net again, with Fiorella's being the lone man-up goal of the afternoon for JCU.

Cook and Fiorella put a bow on the scoring, with goals from each in the fourth. Marietta also added two themselves in the frame.

In addition to the season-high 20 caused turnovers, the Blue Streak defense forced Marietta into committing 31 turnovers, the most by an opponent in over two years. The team also recorded 35 ground balls.

JCU was led by Berdysiak's nine points on four goals and five assists. Morrell had a season-high in goals with six, and matched his season-best in points with eight. Additionally, Fiorella had his second hat trick of the season.

Defensively, Conor Ryan led the way with four caused turnovers, while Zack Moraitis has three. All three goalies on the roster also saw time for JCU.

The Blue Streaks (9-2, 5-1 OAC) will be back in action for their final road trip of the regular season, as they travel to Alliance to face Mount Union on Wednesday, April 19 at 7:00 pm.
