Huge Third Quarter Paves the Way for Road Win over Otterbein for Women's Lacrosse

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Weather forced the Blue Streaks and the Cardinals to wait a week before facing off in women's lacrosse.

JCU Women's Lacrosse took a bit to warm up for the unusual late-afternoon Ohio Athletic Conference matchup, but the Blue Streaks revved up the offense in the third quarter.

Thanks to a 10-goal effort in the third stanza, the Blue Streaks roared for a 17-12 win over Otterbein in Westerville.

John Carroll now advances to 5-6 overall on the year, including 3-1 in OAC play.

Otterbein struck first in the first quarter, but the Blue Streaks responded in kind with four straight goals. Olivia Gerlach and Mary Doherty got the party started. Shannon Burdick followed it up with a goal off a Kendall Gessner assist, and then Gessner finished off the run with her first goal of the day. JCU enjoyed a 4-1 lead after the opening period.

Otterbein got the scoring started in the second period at 11:55, but less than 90 seconds later, Gessner provided a response.

From there, the Cardinals caught fire on offense, ripping home three straight goals. Gerlach stopped the bleeding with a goal at the 4:39 mark of the quarter, but the score stood too close for JCU's liking, 6-5, heading into the halftime break.

Coming out of halftime, the Blue Streaks took command. Gessner set the tone with an unassisted goal in the first minute, starting a flood of offense for the visitors. Burdick then went on a scoring frenzy, with four goals in 1:51 of gametime, with assists provided by Doherty and Anna Spitzer. Sandwiched in there was a Gerlach goal.

Otterbein stopped the onslaught with a marker at 11:15, but JCU was fully in the driver's seat, 12-6.

Spitzer, Gessner, and Kathleen Cagney provided goals down the stretch of the third quarter, upping JCU's lead to 16-8.

With a big cushion, Head Coach Mike Petrella and his staff opted to play many freshmen on the field, often six at a time. While Otterbein made it closer by outsourcing JCU in the final period, 4-1, the experience gained by the team's younger players will pay dividends both down the stretch run and in the future.

For the game, Shannon Burdick topped the team with 5 goals and 7 points, adding a pair of groundballs. Mary Doherty led the way with 8 draw controls. Lainey Donalson continued to have a strong, balanced effort with 3 groundballs, 4 caused turnovers, and 4 draw controls. Josephine Lawler got the win after tabbing 8 saves, while Olivia Munding also registered a save.

Following the long roadtrip to Otterbein, the Blue Streaks have a quick turnaround. John Carroll will get back on the road on Friday to do battle with the Marietta Pioneers.
