Bats Cannot Come Through In Second Game Despite Thrilling Victory In First Against Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – Heidelberg's Peaceful Valley diamond was not so tranquil in the first game of the doubleheader against the John Carroll baseball team, as a combined 32 runs were scored in a 17-15 victory for the Blue Streaks.

However, the JCU offense could not regain its form in Game 2 as they lost 7-3 and dropped their first conference game of the season. The Student Princes also snapped John Carroll's eight game winning streak, its longest since 2015.

Game 1

The Blue Streaks wasted no time as they jumped on the board in the top of the first inning.

A pair of one out singles brought Justin Hanley to the dish with runners on the corners. The graduate student wasted no time and seized the moment with an RBI double to right field. Then, Logan LaMere stepped up and shot a ball to the opposite field to put John Carroll up, 2-0. A double play would end the inning.

Everything seemed to be going well for JCU, until the home half of the third inning. The Student Princes didn't miss an opportunity as a crooked number loomed. Five RBI singles carried the weight of the inning as Heidelberg struck for nine runs off a combination of starter Maxwell Schumaker, Owen Gerba, and Sylvan Wiley. Twelve batters came to the dish in the inning, leading to the offensive onslaught.

However, the Blue Streaks wouldn't stay off the board for long.

Just when it seemed that John Carroll may have been outmatched, they struck runs and bring the game to within one score.

In the frame, Carson Balfour, who replaced Sean Connolly as a pinch hitter, would jump on a pitch with runners on the corners for an RBI single to left. The sophomore produced the run in just his second at-bat of the season.

A walk would then load the bases for Erik Daugenti, who would follow suit with a single to left, this time driving in two runs. A wild pitch moved the junior to second, and there was still a runner 90 feet ahead of him. Michael Persichetti welcomed the advancement with yet another single to left field to add another tally in the JCU column. Persichetti would draw an error to make his way to third, and score on a wild pitch.

However, Adam McVicker had other plans in the home half of the frame.

With two outs, he smashed a ball over the right field wall to secure a bit of a cushion for the Student Princes, putting another run on the board to make it 10-8.

John Carroll would take the lead back in the seventh, starting with a Joe Olsavsky RBI double and Connor Mayle RBI single to tie it up at 10.

LaMere would later double down the left field line to score Mayle to take the lead. Balfour would then reach on a throwing error by Heidelberg pitcher Ty Kirk to add another score to make it 12-10.

The Student Princes would not go down easy, with an additional five runs in the home half of the frame.

McVicker added his second homer of the game on a two-run shot to tie it at 12-12. Then, two batters later with two outs, back-to-back RBI singles would make it 14-12, and another run was tacked on with a Camden Farley double.

Then, the Blue Streaks took the lead for good in the top half of the eighth with five runs.

Olsavsky tripled to score Persichetti, who reached on a walk, to bring JCU within two. Then, Mayle reached on a dropped fly ball to score Olsavsky to make it 15-14. After a Bryce Holt walk, Hanley struck a double to left field to take a one run lead. Balfour tacked on the game's final run with an RBI single to score Hanley as well.

Freshman Roger Simon shut things down on the mound for John Carroll, pitching the final two innings and allowing only one base runner. Olsavsky earned the win, as he pitched in the seventh.

Seven Blue Streaks tallied multiple hits, including three each from Olsavsky and Holt.

It was a comedy of errors for both teams, as a combined 15 occurred throughout the game with eight happening during scoring plays. JCU's seven errors were the most they have had in a single game since 2006 when they played Pitt-Bradford.

Game 2

Like in Game 1, JCU struck first in the opening frame. Olsavsky doubled and then scored on a throwing error while on base during Mayle's at bat to make it 1-0.

Heidelberg immediately tied it up in the home half, on a McVicker double.

Then, in the second, the Student Princes tacked on two more runs with a groundout and a Kyle Krummen RBI single.

JCU made it a one run game in the third on a Holt RBI single, but Heidelberg answered in the fourth with a solo homer to make it 4-2.

The Blue Streaks came within one again, as Persichetti scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, but this time the Student Princes cemented their lead for good by tacking on two more runs on Farley and McVicker RBI doubles.

After Heidelberg scored another run on an RBI single to make it 7-3 in the sixth, JCU had a chance to work some magic like in Game 1 during the eighth.

Mayle and Holt both led off the inning with walks, but Hanley flew out and LaMere struck out as subsequent batters. Then, Sean Connolly walked to load the bases with two outs, but Jack Beiter struck out after pinch hitting for Balfour.

Despite a two out single in the ninth from Olsavsky, the game ended on a Mayle fly out.

Persichetti and Olsavsky each totaled two hits for the Blue Streaks, while John Gavric pitched the final three innings, giving up only one run while walking four and striking out three.

John Carroll will look to earn some more victories against an OAC opponent, as they travel to Ada to face Ohio Northern in a double header on Saturday, April 15. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
