Women's Lacrosse Tallies First Win of 2023 Campaign, Beating Albion on the Road

ALBION, Mich. -- John Carroll Women's Lacrosse will begin the week with a victory, snapping their losing streak after some intense competitors during the onset of their season.

In a scheduling frenzy, the Blue Streaks finally took the field around 4:30 pm, an hour after their scheduled start time due to officials being late coming from another game (and after weather forced a postponement from Saturday to Sunday).

Nonetheless, John Carroll was able to rally, earning a narrow 9-7 victory over Albion College in Michigan.

The Blue and Gold got on the board first, thanks to a swift shot by Shannon Burdick. The scoring continued with Caylin Perryman as the Blue Streaks felt confident and comfortable on unfamiliar turf.

Albion answered nearly halfway through the first period, and they would go on to add another goal in the final four minutes of the first allotment of play.

At the end of one, the teams were deadlocked at a score of 2-2.

But, it wouldn't be long until the Blue Streaks found their footing once again. Olivia Gerlach grabbed control of the draw that opened the second period and finished her acquisition with what would be John Carroll's third goal of the game.

Quickly after, the Blue Streaks grabbed another draw and Kendall Gessner was able to capitalize on the offense to give the Blue and Gold their fourth tally of the match.

In a similar fashion to the first period, the Britons countered John Carroll's second two goals with their own pair. This time, the momentum would continue for Albion.

The Purple and Gold would take their first lead of the game after Addie Pastor's leading shot put the score at 5-4.

Thankfully, JCU's scoring continued with Burdick, who added a goal for the Blue Streaks, keeping John Carroll optimistic. The second period finished with Lainey Donalson finding the back of the net, giving the Blue and Gold a lead going into the locker room at the half.

It was evident that John Carroll was eager to earn a victory, showcased by the squad's tremendous effort in the second half of play.

Olivia Hanulak started the third period with force, netting a free position goal that gave John Carroll a 7-5 lead. Again, Albion exemplified the tenacity of their offense by answering Hanulak's goal less than two minutes later.

But, it was clear that this game was a battle of defensive grit, given that both teams scored their lone goal of the period within the first three minutes. As the clock hit zero at the end of the third, both teams were amped to enter the fourth with triumph in reach.

The fourth period opened with trades of possession, ground ball pickups, draw controls and close calls in terms of scoring.

Nearly half of the period went by before Perryman found twine on a free position shot to put John Carroll up, 8-6. Paster of Albion answered four minutes later with her 32 goal of the season, giving the Purple and Gold their seventh goal of the game.

The outcome of the matchup was solidified by a man-up goal from Anna Spitzer, who would find the back of the net with 17 seconds to play.

John Carroll emerged as the victor this afternoon, and this speaks volumes for what is to come. After a long-opening series of games against some serious competition, the Blue Streaks now have an extra boost of confidence going into the remainder of the 2023 campaign.

The Blue and Gold host Grove City College in a 4:00 pm matchup at Don Shula Stadium on Wednesday.
