Women's Tennis Sweeps Mount Union in OAC Opening Victory

ALLIANCE, Ohio – John Carroll Women's Tennis has made a triumphant return to Northeast Ohio.

The Blue Streaks toiled under the Florida sun last week, challenging themselves and learning about themselves during a week full of contests against higher-level competition.

The work has begun to pay off, as evidenced on Saturday, with a 9-0 conquest of the Mount Union Purple Raiders.

The match was set to be JCU's home opener, but Mother Nature intervened. So, the Raiders and Streaks took the party indoors, where the Blue & Gold won every match, thanks to some intense battles.

One of the most electric contests was the #3 singles bout. Kaylyn Gimbel provided an amazing 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (11-9) victory. The grad transfer won both tiebreakers by the bare minimum, eking out a wonderful win. Felicity Kolb's conquest at #2 singles was nearly as thrilling. The Batavia, Illinois native won 6-4 in the opening set before tabbing a 7-6 win in the second set thanks to a 10-4 tiebreaker.

Mia Zivkovic cruised 6-0, 6-2 at #1 singles as did Caroline Chandler at #4 (6-1, 6-2), Jaclyn Voss at #5 (6-1, 6-0), and Peyton Crumpler (6-2, 6-0) at #6.

Zivkovic and Kolb teamed up for an 8-6 win at top doubles. Gimbel and Chandler tabbed an 8-4 win at #2 while Voss and Duckett nabbed an 8-1 victory at #3.

All in all, it was a great day for JCU, and especially sweet for Walt Oden. The victory marked the first of Oden's collegiate coaching career.

Oden and the Blue Streaks will hope to continue the fun on Wednesday, with a home match against Ashland if Mother nature cooperates.
