Baseball Splits With Allegheny in West Virginia to Win Opening Series

BECKLEY, W. Va. -- Coming off of an opening day victory, the John Carroll baseball team splits the doubleheader against Allegheny College to take the series 2-1.

What a difference a game could make for the Blue Streak offense as they mustered just five runs in game one compared to 17 runs in game two. The offensive surge was powered by sophomore Sean Connolly and junior Erik Daugenti who paved the way for the 12 unanswered runs for the Blue Streaks in their game two victory.

Game One

Allegheny jumped out to an early advantage in game one. With bases loaded and zero outs, John Carroll's Jon Ambro had to dig deep to escape the early offensive attack of the Gators. An RBI single from Matt Jennings began the scoring. Moments later, an error from Ambro allowed Chase Chodkowski to score. An RBI single from Jake Stotsky rounded out the scoring to put the Gator's up 3-0.

However, John Carroll stormed back in the bottom of the second. With bases loaded and two outs, Sean Connolly doubled to left field for an RBI triple to even the score at three apiece.

Allegheny's Tyson Bryant-Dawson continued his hot start to the season with an RBI single in the top of the fourth to put the Gator's back up 4-3. Ambro was replaced by Owen Gerba to begin the fifth. Despite the slow start, Ambro finished with three strikeouts with a total of 21 batters faced.

The Blue Streaks garnered their first lead of the game with a two-run fifth inning. Following a Connolly single, Erik Daugenti tripled to right field for an RBI single bringing Connolly in for the tie. Jusin Hanley then grounded out to first base but did just enough to bring in Daugenti to give the Blue Streaks a 5-4 advantage.

The back and forth affair continued in the sixth inning as a double from Allegheny's Brady Nolin tied the game at 5-5. In the make or break final inning, Allegheny got the last laugh. Stotsky came through for a second time with an RBI double to put them back on top. A sacrifice fly from Sullivan Schueltz tacked on another run to bring the score to 8-5 at the bottom of the seventh.

When the Blue Streaks desperately needed runs, they fell short with a 1-2-3 out inning. Joseph Raleigh earned the win as he finished with one strike out and zero runs surrendered.

Game Two

Despite only scoring five runs in game one, the Blue Streaks redeemed themselves by scoring 17 in game two to take the series 2-1 with a 17-10 victory over the Allegheny Gators.

With bases loaded to begin the second inning, an RBI single from Michael Persichetti gave the Blue Streaks a 3-0 lead. The scoring continued in the third as Justin Hanley had a solo-home run, the first home-run of the season for the Blue Streaks. A sacrifice fly from Logan LaMere stretched the lead to put the Blue Streaks up a comfortable 5-0 lead.

However, as Allegheny has done all series, they fought back once again courtesy of a monstrous third inning. Sloppy play from the Blue Streak outfield allowed Allegheny to gain some momentum after back-to-back-to-back fielding errors resulting in three runs for the Gators. An  RBI single from Brenden Gray cut the deficit to one. Mistakes continued to plague the Blue Streaks with a throwing error bringing in two more Gator runs, both of which were unearned. Nolin capped off the 7-run inning with another score off of an error by the second baseman to bring the score to 7-5.

Sean Connolly helped the Blue Streaks grab momentum back with an RBI double to bring them within one in the fourth to answer back. Owen Gerba then entered for his second appearance of the day to pitch a scoreless inning.

Later on in the sixth inning, Connolly struck again by capitalizing off of two straight wild pitches to make his way to home plate for the tie. Connolly finished with two hits and three runs in four at bats for the game. Gerba answered once again with his third straight scoreless inning.

In a tight 7-7 game heading into the seventh inning, it was John Carroll's turn to go on a scoring run. With bases loaded, LaMere earned a walk to bring in the leading score. Connolly continued his hot streak with an RBI single to increase the Blue Streak lead to two but it was a three-run homer by Daugenti that blew the game wide open in favor of the Blue Streaks as they led 12-7. Gerba went back out for his fourth inning of work, the longest appearance of his young college career, and did his job once again.

The Blue Streaks tacked on some insurance runs in the eighth inning with an RBI double from LaMere and an RBI triple from Daugenti to make it 17-7. Gerba went out for his fifth inning of work. He was able to manage one out while giving up a run before his day was done. He finished with 4.1 innings pitched constantly getting weak contact, keeping JCU in the game until the they could break it open. Graduate Student Garrett Siegel then made his season debut striking out his first batter before LaMere threw out a runner attempting to steal to finish off the eighth. Despite surrendering a run in the ninth Siegel was able to close it out with two strikeouts and a ground out to Connor Mayle.

The Blue Streaks won with a 17-9 final to improve to 2-1 with a big series win heading into the spring break trip to Florida and the Russ Matt Invitational.

The Blue and Gold will be back in action Sunday, March 5th in a doubleheader match up in Lake Myrtle, Florida as they take on Trine University.  Game one is scheduled for 9:00 AM while game two is set for 12:00 PM.
