Women's Soccer Advances to OAC Tournament Championship via Win in PKs over BW

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Soccer is a fascinating sport, and one of the craziest aspects is penalty kicks.

Add in postseason implications, and you get a high-stress operation, particularly when you add a crosstown rivalry to the mix.

But amidst the pressure, John Carroll Women's Soccer continued its magical season on Thursday at Don Shula Stadium. The match is officially recorded as a 0-0 tie, but the Blue Streaks keep dancing in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament via a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks.

The star of the show tonight? Goalkeeper Madeline Martin Kosier

The freshman held the spotlight with poise, notching 9 saves in 110 minutes and then two gigantic saves to begin penalty kicks.

"It felt amazing. PKs isn't really a goalie's game, you just gotta go with your instincts," said Kosier. "People were hyping me up before as I was trying to get in the zone. It felt great. Obviously, you always want a shutout, you never want any in the back of the net. But I think we kept up our end even after that. We kicked it into higher gear, we pushed harder, and tried to get another goals, but going into PKs, and did all we could do."

John Carroll will now advance to the OAC Tournament Championship, hosting Ohio Northern with a trophy and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line.

For the fourth time in five matches, the Blue Streaks scored in the opening seven minutes.

An aggressive Blue Streaks offense pressured the Yellow Jackets in the early going. After the Baldwin Wallace keeper booted the ball towards midfield, Gabriella Walter headed it back forward. Emily Patrzyk protected the ball and played it forward to Alli Malinky up the left side. The sophomore tapped it forward, playing it ahead to Madyson Rosado

The North Ridgeville native left-footed a beautiful ball past the keeper into the right corner of the net, breaking the tie early in the match.

The Blue Streaks kept up the attack, as Rosado tabbed a shot in the 11th minute and Julia Niehaus forced the keeper to make a save in the 14th minute. The Blue Streaks had a few narrow misses.

But the Yellow Jackets presented a strong counterattack. In the 23rd minute, Madeline Martin Kosier tapped a shot off the crossbar, sending the ball bounding into danger. Thankfully, the Blue Streaks sent the ball out of harm's way before a rebound opportunity.

The teams traded possession and chances, with promising buildups by both teams in a match that seemed to elapse quickly.  At halftime, the Blue Streaks held a significant advantage in shots, 11-8, but the stats stood nearly even in shots on goal, 5-4.

The second half opened without much fanfare, with only a Meredith Coloian shot high being the only significant action in the opening portion of the match.

But that changed in the 61st minute. The Yellow Jackets evened up the match, as Ella Barth brought it up the right side and buried a pretty, high shot left corner in what was an impossible chance for Kosier to turn away.

Sarah Gennuso and Patrzyk tallied shots on goal in the 67th and 69th minutes, as the Blue Streaks showcased some quick chances off counters. The Yellow Jackets got a couple solid chances, but the Bue Streaks seemed to enjoy the better opportunities.

But despite John Carroll pressuring the Yellow Jackets with chances, the match went to overtime.

The visitors got the better of the play for the first portion of the first overtime. The Yellow Jackets tallied a couple of chances that Kosier tabbed away smartly, following a dangerous corner kick when the ball bounced around in the box.

The Blue Streaks looked to respond, and attempted to do so. But each buildup was thwarted

Kosier was the story of the second overtime period. The freshman stepped up under pressure and tallied a pair of saves, as the Yellow Jackets outshot the Blue Streaks in the second overtime, 4-1. JCU did get one attempt on goal.

But after 110 minutes, the score still remained tied. And so, penalty kicks began.

John Carroll scored in three out of the first four penalty kicks, with Madyson Rosado, Gabriella Walter, and Emily Patrzyk all scoring. Baldwin Wallace scored in three of the five rounds, with Kosier providing two amazing saves. And in the fifth and final round, Meredith Coloian sent the home fans home happy with a marvelous goal.

Coloian's clincher and Kosier's clutch saves punched John Carroll's ticket to the OAC Tournament Championship.

"We always want to win during the game, you want to prove that you're the better team, but even with PKs, you're technically better and put in the effort that way," said Kosier. "A win is a win, and we're going to take the momentum into the next game and keep the effort up."
