Men's Soccer Gets Off the Schneid, Beating Muskingum in Regular Season Finale

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The stretch run of the Ohio Athletic Conference slate has been tough for John Carroll Men's Soccer.

The Blue Streaks got rid of the taste of three straight losses with a dominant 3-0 win at Muskingum early on Saturday evening.

In doing so, the Blue Streaks punched a ticket to the OAC Tournament, with a home game on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round vs. Capital.

John Carroll got on the board early to set a good tone for the match. Jack Foht opened the scoring for the visitors in the 15th minute, breaking the ice. Patrick Koenig provided the assist, his third straight game on the scoresheet.

Not satisfied with just one, the Blue Streaks continued to pressure the Fighting Muskies. Ben Brucken tallied a pair of shots, but both were turned away. Muskingum got a corner kick and a shot, but nothing came of the chances in the 26th minute.

Following a Patrick Koenig shot in the 30th minute, the JCU coaching staff brought in fresh legs, as did Muskingum. The hosts got their first shot on goal in the 37th minute off a corner kick. But Jake Vogrin, in his return to the crease, stood strong and turned it away.

Luka Pranjeta and Nicholas Ruggiero got shots in the waning minutes of the half, but despite JCU having a 10-2 edge in shots, the score stood at just 1-0 JCU after 45 minutes.

Muskingum came out swinging with a pair of off-target shots, to which the Blue Streaks quickly responded in kind with a flurry of shots, including a Hayden Haffner attempt that was saved in the 56th minute.

Following a pair of corner kicks in the 69th minute, the Blue Streaks got the goal they were seeking. Following a blocked Nicholas Graeca shot, Foht struck again. The Erie native became the team's new leader in goals for the season, as the junior provided a key insurance marker. Pranjeta notched an assist on a goal that certainly helped the Blue Streak faithful breathe much easier.

Each team subbed in fresh legs, and ten minutes later, the changes paid dividends for the Blue Streaks. Pranjeta continued his strong freshman campaign, as the Willoughby South grad notched his fourth goal of the season. Haffner added the assist, his team-leading 20th point of the season.

John Carroll kept up the pressure, but nothing else got past Muskingum's defenses.

The Blue Streaks enjoyed a 27-6 advantage in shots, including 11-2 on shots on goal. Vogrin made both saves to keep a clean sheet in his triumphant return.

At 12-5-1 (6-3 in OAC play), the men of Dejan Mladenovic will look to build on this victory. JCU Men's Soccer will host Capital on Tuesday, hoping to avenge a 3-1 upset defeat on October 21.
