Volleyball Clinches Spot in OAC Tournament with Win at Muskingum

UPDATE (10/28 @ 10:15 pm) -- See the bottom of the article for OAC Tournament info.

NEW CONCORD –
While the Fighting Muskies carried a 3-5 Ohio Athletic Conference record into today's match, a road match in New Concord with tournament implications is a tough spot to be.

John Carroll Volleyball showed no signs of fear, punching a ticket to the OAC Tournament with a definitive defeat of Muskingum.

The Blue Streaks conquered the hosts by set scores of 25-15, 25-17, 25-19. The official OAC seedings will be released later on Saturday.

The match started evenly, with Muskingum owning an early 7-6 lead. But then the visitors awoke, with Mary Kate Sheehan, Natalie Glowe and Jessica Liddle powering a 6-point run. Muskingum fired up a 4-point run, but Muskingum never got back to square.

Glowe, Jennifer Follmer, and Liddle contributed kills during a crucial 5-point run to push the score to 17-11. John Carroll did not release its grip on the lead. Kendra Dziubinski and Sheehna combined for the set-sealing block in a dominant 25-15 set one win.

The second set mirrored the first early on, and the Blue Streaks again stole the momentum with a lengthy run. This time, Marissa Lynch supplied a couple key kills during a 6-1 run. Muskingum trimmed the lead to two points and then one as the match continued. But then a 6-2 JCU jaunt pushed the lead to 18-13. Errors harmed the Muskies down the stretch, while a Steph Conley block and a Glowe kill sealed the coffin on a Muskingum comeback in a 25-17 win.

Michele Benoit's squad roared to start set three, 5-0. But Muskingum clawed back into it, back to 11-8. An 8-1 run by the Blue Streaks, including three Follmer kills, pushed the lead to 19-9. Muskingum made some noise with a 5-point run to make it interesting. But at the end of the day, the Blue Streaks finished the job, ushered on by a couple late Follmer kills.

The St. Joseph Academy product topped the team with 12 kills. Natalie Glowe followed up with eight kills while adding three aces and a pair of blocks. Maddie Maziarz tallied a team-high 16 assists along with 13 digs. Lexi MacDonald led the team with 18 digs.
