Men's Basketball Upends Heidelberg in Impressive Home Win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – John Carroll Men's Basketball (10-2) survived a close matchup with the Student Princes of Heidelberg (9-3) by a score of 81-76 at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Wednesday evening.

John Carroll was coming off a tough trip to Naples, where the Blue Streaks went to 1-1.

The Blue Streaks did not put up a perfect performance at home, but looked good in securing a win in the first game of 2023.

Isaiah Young started today's game by scoring with a layup, which was quickly answered by Will Yontek via the same method. For the rest of the first half, it was essentially a Frazier Frenzy. Luke Frazier scored 23 of the team's 39 points in the half and was vital to maintaining the four-point lead the Blue Streaks took into the half.

Luke Chicone, who came into today leading the OAC in assists, was dishing them out to everyone on the floor throughout the game. Around the 11:30 mark in the second half, the 5'10" guard followed up a three-point assist to Eric Hanna with a steal and fast break dime to Yontek to put the Blue Streaks up, 52-45.

The lead that got as big as 10 in the second half was cut to as little as five in the final three minutes of the game. Chicone and company were nearly perfect from the free throw line down the game to close out the win with relative comfortability.

Frazier finished the game as the highest scorer (26) despite only scoring three points in the second half. Chicone contributed 20 himself, with 10 of those coming from the charity stripe. He also added six rebounds and seven assists.

The Student Princes had a four way tie with 11 points for the highest scorer. Emmanuel Perdue, Eric Panning, Jacob Logsdon, Jashun Cobb all hit the total.

The Blue Streaks shot a nice 45% from the field, including 5-of-16 from deep, with Frazier making three of the triples. Heidelberg did own a 44-29 advantage in rebounds, but the Student Princes were limited to 41.1% shooting.

"It's been the same way all season, we're playing a little tight in the first half and then as our press gets to them, that's when we make our runs," said Chicone. "This was a big one. This was for first place, as Heidelberg was in the lead, so we knew we had to come in here strong. They're one heck of a team. We found our pace and got the W."

John Carroll will be back on the hardwood on Saturday, January 11 to take on the Ohio Northern Polar Bears in University Heights.
