Men's Soccer Slides Past Denison For Key Road Win

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Tonight, the John Carroll Men's Soccer team picked up a massive win over the nationally-ranked Denison Big Red to continue the 2022 season.

John Carroll earned the three points with a 1-0 match, courtesy of a 41st minute goal from Patrick Koenig.

The Blue Streaks were coming into this contest off of a massive premier home victory over one of Division III's most prestigious programs Ohio Wesleyan University, thanks to a Jack Foht brace in the final 90 seconds of the first half.

With the game being pushed back a day due to weather, the Blue Streaks took the extra training to the fullest extent, looking to get their tactics straight and their minds cleared ahead of an important match.

With the first blow of the whistle, the Blue Streaks started with a very high-intensity defensive effort, doing great to dispossess and work with winning the ball back after losses in possession. The coaching staff stressed a strong start, as yearning to gain control of tempo can have long-lasting effects for the rest of the match.

Overall, the first half did not have many offensive threats for either team. Denison really looked for a direct outlet with balls over the top, while John Caroll looked for more methodical build-ups, but failed to capitalize with passing in the final third.

Notable chances largely coming from set pieces for both sides, looking for misdirections and chaos in the box to take advantage of.

With about four minutes left in the first half of action, the Blue Streaks pulled ahead. John Carroll worked up the pitch with good usage of width before slowly working it into the middle. Jack Foht would take the ball and progress forward before the Big Red's defense would put in a proper challenge. Patrick Koenig followed closely behind and took the ball before slotting it past a disorganized keeper and scoring his first career goal, a crucial one at that.

The second half came with a lot of tension between the sides; physicality increasing as both teams looking to find their footing. Other than a few dangerous-looking corners for Denison, and a couple decent chances from the Blue Streak's Aidan Bozak, the second half fell flat from an attacking standpoint.

Steve Samuelson and Carter Esterle held down the fort in the back, both exemplifying excellent defensive work.

At last, the final whistle blew and the Blue Streaks would set their result in stone with a crucial victory for their season, moving onto 4-2-1 and a much-needed boost in morale, as JCU will look forward to Saturday evening.

John Carroll will take on the No. 10 ranked Calvin University in their penultimate non-conference match of the season. The game will celebrate McCarthy Weekend and new Hall of Fame inductees, Tony Szczesiul and Hector Marinaro.
