Women's Soccer Drops to Tough Pacific Lutheran Squad

WHEATON, Ill. – After a heartbreaker late goal dealt John Carroll Women's Soccer the team's first defeat of 2022, another defeat arrived on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks dropped a 6-0 loss to Pacific Lutheran University in the second game of the Bob Baptista Classic in Wheaton on Saturday afternoon.

John Carroll ran into a buzzsaw into a skilled, veteran Pacific Lutheran team. Last year, the Lutes won the program's fifth straight Northwest Conference Championship and reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight time.

The Lutes tallied the game's first shot on net in the 8th minute, but Juliana Kontul proved equal to that challenge. Kontul turned away another chance in the 11th minute.

Pacific Lutheran missed a shot high in the 22nd minute before finally honing in on the net in the 23rd minute. Alyssa Leong slotted a pass to Hannah Cecil, who placed the ball in the lower right corner for the opening tally.

Not long after, Emily Patrzyk tried a shot, but it was blocked. Taylor Wohleber also missed on a shot, and the Lutes counterattacked, though Kontul turned away the chance.

In the 38th minute, the Lutes struck again. Julia Causbie inflicted the wound this time, soaring a shot high right to double the advantage to two.

And less than two minutes later in the 40th minute, the Lutes delivered the backbreaker. Olivia Boehm and Kayden Hulquist conspired to get the ball to Joelle Buck. The Snoqualmie, Washington native did the rest, pushing a shot low right corner. And just like that, the Blue Streaks trailed by a trio entering the second half, despite a promising shot by Julia Suttman (JCU's first on net of the game) in the waning seconds.

To start the second half, Kontul turned away a shot in the 55th minute. John Carroll responded with a chance of its own, as Grace Monnin forced PLU to work in net.

In the 61st minute, Kontul notched another save, and JCU cleared the ball. But the Lutes did not relent. Pacific Lutheran's Meghan Michaels dribbled up the middle of the field, sprinting with good speed. She passed ahead and right to her teammate, Hanna Cecil. The sophomore forward did the rest, taking a few touches before pushing it across the goalline, lower-left corner in the 62nd minute.

Just 36 seconds later, the Lutes padded the lead again. Pacific Lutheran slotted a pass from the center of the field to the left and the waiting foot of Julia Causbie. She worked up the line and created some space for herself, enough to send it home, lower-right corner, for her second of the day.

John Carroll staunched the bleeding for a while, but the Lutes finished off the scoring in the 82nd minute, as Cecil found Hulquist for a goal into the lower-right corner.

John Carroll drops to 1-2-2 on the season with the defeat.

The Blue Streaks return to the friendly confines of Don Shula Stadium on Wednesday, hosting Thiel College in a 7 pm match.
