Women's Tennis Loses a Heartbreaker in the OAC Semifinal to ONU

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- A lengthy run of excellence came to a close for John Carroll Women's Tennis on Friday.

At the Queen City Racquet Club, the Blue Streaks' half-decade run atop the Ohio Athletic Conference came to a close in the 2022 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinal.

The Blue Streaks fell in a heartbreaker 5-4 loss at the hands of Ohio Northern, snapping a 5-season run as the conference champs.

John Carroll started solidly on Friday indoors, but couldn't keep the momentum rolling towards the bottom of the lineup. The Blue Streaks were on the brink of victory but couldn't slam the door shut.

Megan Reese and Mia Zivkovic set the tone for doubles. In what was a dynamic duo all season long, the tandem fired up an 8-1 conquest. Morgan Little and Caroline Chandler teamed up for a major 8-4 win next, pushing the lead to 2-0.

Jaclyn Voss and Emily Day nearly completed the doubles sweep, but came up short. The No. 3 doubles squad lost a hard-fought affair, 8-7, as the Polar Bears won the 7-4 tiebreaker.

Megan Reese pushed the JCU lead ahead to 3-1 with a dominant victory at No. 1 singles. The senior star corralled a 6-2, 6-0 win. ONU bounced back with a win over Morgan Little at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1.

Mia Zivkovic pushed the Polar Bears to the edge with a triumph at No. 2 singles. The sophomore standout soared to a huge 6-0, 6-0 win.

But John Carroll could get no farther, as ONU's strategy of stacking the lower part of the lineup paid off. First, with Miranda Wills at No. 4 singles, as she won the match over Caroline Chandler, 6-0, 6-4, after playing at No. 1 doubles.

Emily Day and Peyton Crumpler then fought tooth and nail at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Day fought back after a 7-5 opening loss, rolling to a 6-0 set two win. But then she faltered in the third, set, 6-1. So the Polar Bears tied it at 4-4, bringing the match all to No. 6 singles.

Crumpler lost the opening set, 6-0, before forcing a third set with a 7-6 win (thanks to a 7-2 tiebreaker). But Crumpler could not pull away in the third and deciding set, falling 6-2.

With the loss, John Carroll ends the season at 10-8. And so ends a lengthy run of dominance atop the conference for the Blue Streaks, despite a very hard fight by JCU on Friday.
