JCU's OAC Tournament Hopes Fade in Season Finale with BW

BEREA, Ohio -- The stakes were simple.

Sweep crosstown rival and #15 team in the country Baldwin Wallace, and the John Carroll baseball team would have a chance at making their second straight OAC Tournament.

Unfortunately, the Blue Streaks fell to the Yellow Jackets 6-2 in what was a cold and rainy afternoon that delayed the middle of the game for about two hours. Because of darkness and the delay, a game two could not be played which ended JCU's season.

BW struck first in the opening inning with an RBI single from Alex Ludwick and a sacrifice fly from Luke Vonderhaar to give the Yellow Jackets an early 2-0 advantage.

The Baldwin Wallace lead did not last long as the Blue and Gold answered with two runs of their own in the second.

After another rough start to the inning with back-to-back outs, Connor Mayle hit an RBI double to score Matthew Springer to get JCU on the board. Henry Haracz finished off the scoring with an RBI double of his own to bring Mayle home for the score.

Soon afterwards, the pitching began to settle in for both teams. After allowing two runs in the first inning, John Carroll's Mitchell Midea managed to get six of the next seven BW batters out, two of which came from strikeouts. Meanwhile, Baldwin Wallace's Dawson Gabe managed six outs against the next eight Blue Streak batters.

The scoring resumed in the bottom of the fourth as Baldwin Wallace loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly from Sean Kolenich broke the tie while moments later, an RBI double from Bijan Kamalipour increased the Yellow Jacket lead to three.

After the lengthy rain delay that began in the top of the fifth inning, Baldwin Wallace picked up right where they left off offensively as Ryan Guggenheim singled to left field to bring the score to 6-2.

The Blue and Gold were never able to get the offense going following the rain-delay, as they managed just two base runners in the final four innings.

JCU's pitchers struggled as they allowed 10 walks, but only allowed six hits while striking out nine hitters.

At the plate, Joe Olsavsky and Springer led the Blue Streaks with two hits each.

With the loss, John Carroll finishes the season just under .500 with an 18-20 record, including 9-8 in OAC play.
