Women's Tennis Gets Back on Track by Conquering the Comets

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Following a difficult loss that snapped a 55-match conference winning streak, John Carroll Women's Tennis returned to form on Friday.

The Blue Streaks breezed by the Capital University Comets, 8-1.

In the second home contest of the year at the Short Family Tennis Center, the Blue Streaks burst ahead with three wins at doubles and never looked back. Shaun Keenan's squad earned the win despite being down two starters.

Megan Reese and Jaclyn Voss breezed past their foes at No. 1 doubles to start. The duo snagged an 8-2 victory. The No. 3 doubles match featured a similar script. Peyton Crumpler and Caroline Chandler fired up an 8-2 win to set JCU ahead 2-0.

The No. 2 doubles match proved to be the best of the bunch, as JCU's Emily duo took the court.

Emily Day and Emily Duckett paired up against a stout pair of challengers from the Comets. It was a back-and-forth affair with plenty of changes in momentum. But at the end of a pitched battle, the Blue Streaks reigned victorious. Day and Duckett secured a very narrow 8-7 victory to help John Carroll sweep the doubles.

Megan Reese faced a solid challenge at No. 1 singles but got the win. The Massillon native experienced a 6-3 win to start, then rolled in the second set, 6-1.

"It means everything to bounce back from Wednesday's loss," said Reese. "We hadn't lost a conference match in a while, so that was a big loss, and we weren't expecting it. But this win means a lot, especially with us missing two of our top lineup here. Personally, I'm working on staying healthy for the last few matches. And then you're always working on your mental game."

At No. 2 doubles, Emily Day had a quick turnaround after her lengthy doubles match. She didn't show any signs of fatigue, firing out for a 6-1 opening win. The Wadsworth native finished things off with a 6-3 W.

Caroline Chandler experienced little difficulty in dispatching a victory at No. 3 singles. She roared to a 6-0 set one win before finishing it with a 6-2 conquest in the second set.

Jaclyn Voss stumbled to start at No. 4 singles, with a 6-0 loss. The junior responded with an outstanding 6-4 victory. After earning the split sets, Voss played a tiebreaker. In the bonus session, Voss fell, 10-5.

Peyton Crumpler got going early and never looked back at No. 5 singles. The freshman fired out for a 6-3 win to start and then a 6-2 victory to finish.

Emily Duckett roared to a conquest at No. 6. The sophomore stood out with a 6-0, 6-1 win for the Blue & Gold.

The Blue Streaks are back home next Wednesday, hosting Baldwin Wallace at 3:30 pm weather-permitting.
