AUSTINTOWN, Ohio --Â Offensive fireworks and a record-setting day for Joe Olsavsky powered the John Carroll baseball team to two come from behind victories, 14-13 and 12-10, respectfully, over Wilmington at Austintown Fitch High School's Coppola Field to gain some steam in OAC play.
The sophomore shortstop Olsavsky had a walk-off two RBI double to win game one, and set single game program marks in home runs (3), hits (5), and total bases (15) while also tying the RBI record with six in game two.
"There were two great team wins today," Olsavsky said. "We battled back all day and didn't give into anything. We've battled adversity all year and this was the definition of bouncing back no matter what the situation is and that will be the story of our season."
Game 1
The two squads battled it out in the first game as the score remained at zeros until the bottom of the fifth inning, when JCU's Henry Haracz hit an RBI double down the left field line to get on the scoreboard.
The next batter Olsavsky then recorded the first of his three RBIs on a double to center field to make it 2-0.
Blue Streak pitching began to unravel in the sixth as they allowed two base runners to begin the frame. After a bunt groundout, the Quakers proceeded to score seven runs-six of which came with just the one out as they led 7-2.
However, John Carroll would counter back with nine runs of their own in their half of the sixth, with Jared Orwell, Matthew Springer, and Erik Daugenti each recording RBIs to make it 7-5.
An error by the pitcher scored Springer with Olsavsky at bat to make it 7-6, and two batters later, Luke Galioto tied the game up at 7-7 on a bases loaded walk.
Victor Glaser then hit a three RBI double to take a 10-7 advantage as Bennett Cavaretta added an insurance RBI single to make it 11-7 by inning's end.
Wilmington would not go away as with two outs, Noah Martin sent two runners home on an RBI double to chip away at the lead 11-9.
The next batter, Tyler Shaney, hit another two-RBI double to tie the game at 11-11.
JCU broke through again with a solo home run from Glaser in the eighth to take back the lead, 12-11.
The Quakers yet again made noise in the ninth as Martin slapped another two-RBI double down the left field line to make it 13-12.
John Carroll found their stride in the ninth after a pinch-hit strikeout to lead off the bottom frame of the ninth. Springer got on with a walk, and Daugenti and Haracz each hit singles to load the bases for Olsavsky's walk-off two-RBI double.
All but one Blue Streak starter recorded at least one hit in the game, with the team totaling 16. Daugenti led the way with four hits while Glaser went 3-for-5 with four RBIs.
Each Quaker starter had a hit as they tallied 17 as a team. Martin and Shaney led the way, with five and four RBIs, respectfully.
Game 2
Much like the first game, both teams exchanged leads multiple times throughout the contest.
The Quakers got on the board first in the opening inning on a sacrifice fly to take an early 1-0 lead.
However, JCU would rattle off three runs in the second on a Haracz two-RBI single and Olsavsky double to go on top 3-1.
Wilmington then got hot in the fourth, as they scored five runs to take the advantage back 6-3.
John Carroll would creep back into the game in the bottom half of the fourth with Olsavsky's first homer that scored two runs to come within one, 6-5.
The Quakers added more in the sixth with runs scored on an error and a single to make it an 8-5 game, but the Blue Streaks would add two themselves with an Olsavsky two-run blast to get within one.
On the very next pitch, Benjamin Surman hit a dinger to right center to tie the game 8-8.
Wilmington grabbed the lead back in the seventh on an Aaron Burns two-run homer to go up 10-8, but JCU clawed back again on a Springer home run to right center field to make it 10-9.
The next batter, Henry Haracz, then hit a solo homer of his own in almost the same spot as Springer's to tie it up at 10-10.
Then, Olsavsky stepped to the plate and blasted his program-record third round-tripper of the game to take the lead 11-10.
JCU then added an insurance run in the eighth on a Cavaretta sacrifice fly for their final score of the game.
After Blue Streak starter Jon Ambro exited after three innings, the bullpen of Owen Gerba, Samuel Basso, and Mitchell Midea stepped up as they only allowed five hits combined the rest of the way.Â
Midea, who is normally the ace pitcher for JCU, was called in for long relief as he went the game's final four innings while recording six strikeouts and earning his first win of the season.
Just like game one, each Blue Streak starter but one recorded at least one hit as they combined for 16 as a team.
On top of Olsavsky's record breaking performance along with being a triple away from hitting for the cycle, Haracz stepped up as well as he went a season-high 3-for-4 with three RBIs and the home run batting in the ninth spot.Â
The Blue Streaks will look to keep things rolling in OAC play as they battle Ohio Northern on Saturday, April 9 at Schweickert Field in University Heights at a time still to be determined.
