Men's Lacrosse Holds Off Comeback to Defeat Grove City on the Road

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- In a mid-week road game in the midst of spring break, John Carroll Men's Lacrosse wasted no time in getting ahead of things.

The Blue Streaks, ranked No. 11 in the latest USA Lacrosse Magazine poll, fired ahead to an early lead, but a pesky Grove City team refused to go away.

Despite a ferocious late comeback effort by the Wolverines, the Blue Streaks held on for a 12-10 victory.

John Carroll buried goals in bunches in the early going. Cullen Zarek began the party, scoring just under three minutes into the contest. Matt Berdysiak tallied an unassisted gino before Morgan Morrell scored off a Brendan Whitty assist. Reed Stuhlreyer ripped home two goals by himself late in the period, extending JCU's lead to 5-0 after the first.

Whitty helped Ian Flynn find twine to start the second. Grove City finally got on the board at the 8:50 mark. Morgan Morrell responded a few minutes later with a man-up goal, getting a pass from Jared Gorenflo. Flynn and Grove City traded a couple goals in the final stages of the half, so JCU headed into the break with a 9-3 advantage.

Kevin Hack and Flynn teamed up for the initial goal after halftime. Stuhlreyer and Hack then tickled the twine to push JCU ahead entering the fourth quarter, 12-5.

The Blue Streaks looked to be in great shape, but then the Wolverines came storming back by winning every faceoff and outshooting JCU by a wide margin. The hosts scored five straight, but John Carroll never allowed the lead to dwindle under two.

The Blue & Gold pushed ahead to 4-0 on the year with the conquest. Stuhlreyer and Flynn paced the Blue Streaks with three goals apiece. Jon Gaglio anchored the net, with 14 saves and 7 ground balls. Hack also had a nice day with 2 points and 4 ground balls.

Looking at team stats, the Blue Streaks went 2-for-3 on the man-up and completed 21-of-23 clears.

The Blue Streaks now look ahead to a huge test at home on Saturday. John Carroll will welcome No. 18 Ohio Wesleyan to Don Shula Stadium in a battle of two Division III titans.
