Rain Dampens Day for Softball, But Triple Play Provides Sunny Moment

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The week began on a tough note for John Carroll Softball on Monday.

After a run-rule victory on Sunday to open the season, the Blue Streaks lost to Gordon College on Monday afternoon, 8-0. And then, Mother Nature unleashed a torrential downpour, wiping out the second game vs. Rivier, after JCU built a 2-0 lead.

Schedule adjustments may happen in the coming days, as JCU is now down two games. Stay tuned for updates, though regardless, Tuesday is the team's off day.

Game 1
The Blue Streaks scuffled on offense, but did make a great defensive play that highlighted the game.

With no outs and two runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth, a Scot hit a dribbler to Mallory Stonebraker. The first baseman tossed it home to Kasyn Scarantine. JCU's star catcher chased down the runner on third trying to back track and tagged her for the second out. Scarantine then tossed it to Lexie Genovese, who tagged the next runner between second and third for the second out. Genovese then fired to Alyssia Carmichael, who was covering first. Carmichael bulleted it to Gracie Bressoud, who came in from her spot in center field to tag the batter, who was heading to second, for the final out.

If you're struggling to follow that at home, it's your standard 3-2-6-4-8 triple play.

Words don't do it justice, as it was truly remarkable.

The Scots opened things up with an offensive outburst in the top of the first inning. Gordon tallied three straight hits, revving up the offense to open up a 3-0 lead.

John Carroll threatened to respond in the bottom of the second, getting two runners aboard with two outs. But the Scots managed to escape. The Scots added to the lead further in the top of the third, as Lily Rivera clobbered a dinger for Gordon over the left field wall, pushing the score to 4-0.  Gordon loaded the bases with 2 outs, threatening to score more, but JCU escaped.

The Scots started the fifth with more offense, tacking on another run. Then, that wild triple play happened for John Carroll, and you can count on one hand the number of times it's happened in JCU Softball history.

The Scots finished things off with a few more runs, ending the game after six innings with an 8-0 win. Katie DeBord accepted the loss to drop to 1-1 on the year.

Game 2

As clouds appeared ominously in the sky, JCU started off with zest in Game 2 vs. the Rivier University Raiders. Crista Nativio opened the game with a single up the middle. Bressoud was hit by the pitch, setting runners on first and second. Maddie Traub then bunted and got aboard, plating Nativio in the process.

After a couple outs, Traub advanced to third on a stolen base. She scored as Alyssia Carmichael reached on an error. Carmichael got to second on a passed ball with Gabby Hougan at the plate, and then the rain became too much, washing the game.
