6-Run 6th Inning Rockets JCU Baseball to Victory over Yeomen

OBERLIN, Ohio -- Playing in Northeast Ohio for the first time in 2022, John Carroll Baseball appeared right at home.

On Tuesday, the Blue Streaks utilized a 1-out rumpus in the sixth to secure a 12-2 victory at Oberlin.

The road win over the Yeomen propelled the Blue Streaks to 5-9 on the year.

John Carroll got rolling quickly. Joe Olsavsky started the game with a walk and a quick stolen base. Ben Surman knocked in a single up the middle to bring in Olsavsky for a rapid 1-0 lead.

Jon Ambro fired through the first couple innings before allowing the Yeomen to tie things up in the third due to a couple singles and some small ball.

The Blue Streaks and Yeomen each penned a run in the fourth. Landen Glaser clobbered a homer to open the frame, and Oberlin responded with a walk and a triple to knot the game at two apiece.

John Carroll hopped in the driver's seat and sped away with the game in the sixth. Logan LaMere opened a 1-out rally with a double, and then hopped home on a Bennett Cavaretta single. Matthew Springer then reached on a bunt single, and Henry Haracz then clubbed a double to plate Cavaretta. With two on and one out, Oberlin turned to the bullpen.

The pitching change didn't matter, as Olsavsky slotted a single up the middle to score both runners. The sophomore soon stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch. Oberlin struggled to stop the bleeding, loading the bases. The Yeomen got a double play to escape the frame a batter later, but JCU still stood in full control, 8-2.

After Oberlin went quietly in the bottom of the inning, JCU got another run in the top of the seventh via a Spring double, and then three more in the eighth thanks to an Oberlin error plus baseknocks by Springer and Haracz.

Ambro got credit for the win on the mound, allowing just 2 runs in 6 innings, striking out 6 batters in the process.

Garrett Siegel and Sean Connolly enjoyed excellent relief efforts to prevent any crazy Oberlin comeback. Henry Haracz also pitched, making his first appearance on the bump since 2020, hurling a scoreless ninth.

Springer ushered the offense, finishing the day with a sterling 4-for-5 line with 2 RBI and a run. Haracz and Olsavsky also tallied 2 RBI, with Olsavsky's 3 stolen bases making him a menace on the basepaths. Surman (2-for-4, RBI) also looked good swinging the bat.

John Carroll will be right back at it on Wednesday (weather permitting), facing Oberlin again at 4 pm.
