Men's Basketball Bows Out of OAC Tournament in Quarterfinal Loss to Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The No. 10 seeded John Carroll Men's Basketball team headed out on the road for a second straight day to take on the nationally-ranked No. 8 Mount Union in the Quarterfinals of the OAC Tournament. The Blue Streaks were blitzed early by the Purple Raiders, and in turn played the final game of the season to a loss, 93-65.

With the loss, the Blue Streaks' season came to an end with an 8-16 record.

Mount Union came out quickly in the first half. In the first 10 minutes of the opening frame, the Blue Streaks struggled to score, eclipsing the ten-point mark well into the first half. The defensive effort by the Blue Streaks kept them within striking distance, however, and despite only making two three-pointers in the first half, JCU never let the lead grow to more than 20 points. The upperclassmen continued to put forth everything they had, as PJ Flannery and Jackson Sartain attempted to keep the Blue & Gold afloat. After 20 minutes, John Carroll entered halftime down 15 at 40-25, still well within striking distance.

Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, the No. 8 Purple Raiders continued to flex their muscles in the second half, once again being the aggressors. The Blue Streaks held tough throughout the half, matching most, if not all Purple Raider baskets. Injuries and fouls affected the JCU big men late, and Mount Union seized the opportunity to put an upset out of reach for the Blue and Gold, although the effort never wavered from John Carroll.

The clock hit double zero, and the Blue Streaks' season ended in a loss, 93-65.

Despite ending the season with a record of 8-16 and a last-place regular season finish this season in the OAC, the Men's Basketball team played with grit, toughness, and heart through injuries, COVID, and the lowest of lows. Seniors Owen O'Toole, Mason Trubisky, PJ Flannery, Hugh Brown, and Jackson Sartain exemplified what it meant to be Men of Carroll day in and day out, and will graduate this May as some of the best members of the class of 2022.

The Blue Streaks will enter the 2022-2023 season as a young team with experience, and will look to reenter the OAC championship race with a vengeance.
