Women's Basketball Rockets Past Yellow Jackets, Climbing to Top of OAC Standings

BEREA, Ohio -- The No. 13 John Carroll University Women's Basketball team (19-3, 13-2 OAC) came to Baldwin Wallace with one mission tonight: capturing the top spot in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Due to John Carroll's sharpshooting and offensive dominance on the court, the Blue Streaks completed their mission by capturing a decisive 67-54 victory over the No. 10 Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets (17-4, 14-2 OAC).

The victory also marks the first time John Carroll has beaten Baldwin Wallace in five straight games since Dec. 7, 1993.

"I knew this game was going to be exciting," said Head Coach Beth Andrews. "I knew the fans were going to be here and that it was going to be a great atmosphere. I am very proud of our seniors and upperclassmen for leading this team and playing not to lose. They played to win, and they were able to pull it off."

Similar to John Carroll's last three games against Baldwin Wallace, the Blue Streaks came out red hot with an 11-0 scoring streak in the opening quarter. Despite their strong showing in the first half, Baldwin Wallace gave John Carroll a run for their money in the final two quarters of the game.

"That was their goal to go on an 8-0 run at the start of the game," admitted Andrews. "They focused on the little things and really let our defense drive us offensively. We had to get back to that in the second half, but I am really proud of how they came out and found a groove."

Throughout the game, John Carroll shot 44% from the field and 83.3% from the charity stripe. On the other side, John Carroll's defense held Baldwin Wallace to only 31.6% shooting from the field.

Less than a week away from the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, the win against Baldwin Wallace gives the Blue Streaks extra momentum heading into the OAC Tournament as they assume the top seed in the conference.

"Every win is going to be important coming up. The goal is to survive and advance. This game felt like that," said Andrews. "Home court advantage is what every team dreams of going into the OAC Tournament, and I am proud they pulled that off."

It wasn't until the seventh minute of the game that John Carroll surrendered their first points of the day to Baldwin Wallace. Despite the Yellow Jackets scoring eight points in the last three minutes of the quarter, John Carroll continued to dominate as they held an 18-8 lead going into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, John Carroll came out yet again with another scoring streak. The Blue Streaks outscored the Yellow Jackets 5-0 in the first two minutes of the quarter courtesy of a 3-pointer from Nicole Heffington and two free throws from Gabrielle Gevaudan

After a jumper from Gevaudan, the Blue and Gold took a 19 point advantage, 31-12, against the Yellow Jackets at the halfway point of the second quarter. Baldwin Wallace continued to pressure John Carroll's defense, but ultimately the Blue Streaks stood strong as they limited the hosts to 11 points in the second quarter.

Going into the locker room, John Carroll held a remarkable 35-19 lead, with Olivia Nagy leading the way with eight points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Coming out of the locker room, Baldwin Wallace displayed a newfound offense. With 1:29 left in the third quarter, John Carroll took a timeout as Baldwin Wallace cut the Blue Streak's lead to 13, courtesy of a six-point run. The Yellow Jacket's offensive spurt continued as they ended the quarter, silencing John Carroll on a 12-0 run. The Yellow Jackets trailed by nine points in the fourth quarter, 45-34.

The Yellow Jackets continued to mount a comeback against the Blue & Gold in the fourth quarter. Baldwin Wallace cut John Carroll's lead to one possession, 46-43, as Emily Irwin hit back-to-back 3-pointers with 5:47 left in the game.

Heffington quickly responded to the Yellow Jackets with a 3-pointer, but the Yellow Jackets continued their strong shooting from outside the arc as Regan Schill made a 3-point jumper at the 2:27 mark of the game.

Adler took advantage of an opportunity at the charity stripe to extend John Carroll's lead to 62-52 with under a minute left in the game.

Ultimately, John Carroll defended their lead in the last two minutes and came away with a 67-54 victory on the road.

Heffington led John Carroll in points with 16, followed by Nagy with 14. Nagy also captured 13 rebounds and five assists.

For the next few days, John Carroll will focus on finishing the season and preparing for the OAC Tournament.

"I think our plan is just living in the moment, living in every practice and living game by game right now," said Andrews. "You need to take your time and let things flow."

John Carroll will return home for their final regular-season game on Saturday, Feb. 19. Saturday's 2 p.m. contest will also mark Senior Day for the Blue and Gold's senior class as they compete against Wilmington College. JCU needs a win to secure the regular-season crown and the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
