Men's Basketball Can't Upend Yellow Jackets in Front of Raucous Home Crowd

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- With a packed house to celebrate admissions night for incoming first-year students, the Blue Streaks hosted Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday evening. After a lopsided loss in the last meeting between the teams, John Carroll kept it close at home in the rivalry rematch.

The Blue Streaks looked great for long stretches, but could not upend the Yellow Jackets in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, losing 88-77.

Baldwin Wallace jumped to a 11-4 lead in the first three minutes to force an early timeout from Head Coach Pete Moran '08. The Blue Streaks found their groove offensively, but Jake Snyder and Anthony Mazzeo kept the lead for BW with threes.

After 3-pointers from Jackson Sartain, Eric Hanna, and Connor O'Toole, the Blue Streaks cut it to one, but Drew Wennes and Jake Snyder answered with triples of their own to build the lead back up to seven halfway through the first half. A couple JCU turnovers and a dunk from Jackson Simmons forced another timeout with 6:27 remaining from the Blue Streaks as they trailed 44-34.

While the JCU defense improved in the latter half of the first half, the Blue Streaks trailed 52-42 at the half. Anthony Mazzeo had a game-high 17 at the half behind three 3-pointers. He also led the Yellow Jackets in rebounds with five. Connor O'Toole led the Blue Streaks with 8 points at the half, David Gentry led in rebounds with five, and William Wallace had a strong half as well as he had six points and five assists halfway through the contest.

The second half started fast as well. Mason Trubisky had a huge block on the opening possession and followed it with a three pointer in the middle of two threes from Sartain, to cut the lead to 57-53. Omar Abuhamdeh added a three as well to answer a BW layup and the deficit was as low as three points five minutes into the second half.

Two free throws from David Gentry and a layup from Abuhamdeh gave JCU their first lead of the night 60-59 with 13:50 to play, but Wennes capitalized on a three-point play and Ashton Price hit a corner three to push the BW lead back up to five just 40 seconds later, and Coach Moran called a timeout.

A minute later, Connor O'Toole went coast-to-coast for a layup and the free throw to cut it back to two. Rob Watson III followed with a big layup of his own to answer back, and Luke Driscoll capitalized on a three point play to quickly push the Yellow Jacket lead up to seven once again. That seemed to be the story of the night. Every time JCU hinted at a run, BW would answer with multiple scores of their own.

With 7:22 remaining, Sartain and Snyder traded threes, and Coach Tom Heil of BW called a timeout with the score 73-67. Out of the timeout, Snyder hit a three and Driscoll got a quick layup, but a big three from PJ Flannery slowed the BW momentum as their lead was back to eight.

With two minutes to go the Blue Streaks trailed by seven. William Wallace missed the front end of a one and one, and Hugh Brown had a three go around the rim and out, and JCU was forced to foul. Shane Zalba had a huge block on a step back three from Sartain, and Mazzeo hit four free throws to put the game away. The final score of 88-77 clinched a season sweep for the Yellow Jackets.

Mazzeo led the game with 24 points while going a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. Snyder added 17 behind five three pointers for BW. The Blue Streaks were led by Sartain with 13 points, and Trubisky had a career night defensively with four blocks. While JCU led in rebounds, BW dominated points in the paint 40-28, had 18 second chance points, and the Blue Streaks had 14 turnovers. The game was fast paced all 40 minutes, and the Yellow Jackets had an answer for any sign of life from the Blue Streak offense, usually by way of one of their 11 threes on the night.

The next game for the Blue Streaks will be at home this Saturday February 19 for Senior Day in the regular-season finale.
