Women's Basketball Falls to #3/5 Transylvania

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- In the last home game of the 2022 calendar year for the Blue Streaks, John Carroll Women's Basketball lost to the Transylvania Pioneers.

Coming into the game, the Blue Streaks were 5-3, with a 4-0 record at home. The Pioneers came into the match up undefeated at 8-0. Transylvania entered the game ranked #3 in the country.

Transy looked every bit of one of the best teams in Division III, dealing JCU an 82-39 loss.

The Pioneers came out strong, winning the tip and scoring a quick 3. John Carroll did their best to answer back with a basket of their own, but Transylvania took an early 15-2 lead. The Blue Streaks battled back, closing the lead to 11-16 at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 9-1 run lead by junior Halle Landies, who had 7 points in the first quarter.

Transylvania came back out for the second quarter strong, battling back to extend their lead once again. Ending the quarter with a lead of 41-16, the Pioneers dominated the floor in the second quarter. Junior Sydney Wright led the way for the away team with 12 points, followed directly by Kennedi Stacy also with 12 points in the first half. The Pioneer defense held JCU to only 5 points the entire second quarter while scoring 25 of their own points. The two scores for the Streaks came from Halle Landies with a 3 point bucket and sophomore Maddie Pietrowski with a jumper good for two. Freshman Carmen Heuker added to the Blue Streak game with 3 assists. Senior Kennedi Stacy also led the game with 5 steals, owning half of her team's 10 steals. The home team did not help their game with 14 turnovers in the first half alone.

Transylvania kept their foot on the gas, scoring first in the second half with a layup made by senior Madison Kellione. John Carroll answered back quickly with a made shot of their own by sophomore Olivia Giunta. The two teams traded made shots, giving a score of 53-28 Transylvania half way through the third quarter. Each team added to their total with a score of 60-33 entering the last 10 minutes of competition.

Starting the last period of regulation, the Pioneers went on a 13-0 run after JCU's made shot to open the period. Christina Passerell ended the run with a jumper for two with just under 4:30 left in the game. John Carroll fell further behind in the game, losing the matchup, 82-39.

The teams were closely matched throughout the game in rebounds, a difference of only 3, but the big difference came in the category of turnovers. While Transylvania had 12 turnovers, JCU had 26.

Outstanding players for the Pioneers include junior Sydney Wright with 20 points, not missing a 3-point shot all game. Seniors Kennedi Stacy and Dasia Thornton combined for 13 rebounds, 9 of which were on the defensive side. John Carroll also had some standouts with Landies leading the team with 13 points. Maddie Pietrowski was the next highest scorer with 8 points also contributing 2 steals for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll is back in action December 29, 2022 for the Naples Classic and back home in the new year on January 7, 2023.
