Men's Soccer Fires Past Scranton in First Round of the NCAA Tournament

BALTIMORE, MD-- The Road Dawgs made their mark in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 3-0 win over the Scranton Royals in the Baltimore night.

John Carroll Men's Soccer has now won five straight opening round games in the NCAA Tournament.

With the 3-0 conquest, the Blue Streaks move on to the Second Round on Sunday at 6 pm vs. the host of the pod, Johns Hopkins.

The game started out cold with most of the action occurring around midfield. There were only three shots in the first 15 minutes.

At the fifteenth minute, junior forward Patrick Koenig found the back of the net in the top left corner after a beautiful cross put into the box by Steven Samuelson

From there, the Blue Streak caught fire in the first half. The momentum shifted from the middle of the field to Scranton's side of the pitch, and it all started with Koenig's goal.

"We needed to get on the board early to make a statement," Koenig stated. "For me to help make that statement is incredibly important, and I could not have done it without the beautiful pass from Samuelson. It showed as we were able to rally and get two more goals on the board before the half.

On an attempted clear ball by the Royals, the Erie native Jack Foht put his body to use and stops the ball with a breakaway attempt. With defenders behind him and the goalkeeper going low, Foht floated the ball over the sliding goalkeeper and extended the lead to two.

The momentum does not stop there for the Blue Streaks in their first half push.

With time ticking in the first half, Logan Brown was surrounded by a handful of royals. While cornered, Brown sent an absolute dime across the pitch through the Royal hallway and found senior Michael Burrington on a one-on-one opportunity against the goalie. Burrington found the back of the net and extended the lead to three at the end of half.

At the end of the half, the Blue Streaks outshot the Royals 8-2, and enjoyed a 6-0 margin in terms of shots on goal.

As the second half got underway, the Royals were not ready to give up, as they knew their season was on the line.

The first highlight was when Patrick Koenig put a rope into the lower left corner around the 61st minute mark. For the Royals, goalkeeper Aiden Hartey stretched out his fingers and poked it away.

The Royals continued to rally and put shots on net, and outshot John Carroll 7-6, and also shots on goal, 4-3.

Although the Royals had four shots on goal, they all happened around the 70th minute. Seamus O'Keefe kept finding the ball in the box after a corner kick and kept putting shots on net. Thankfully for junior goalkeeper Jake Vogrin, the Carroll defense got it out of the box.

The last 20 minutes of the game turned gritty for the Royals. They knew their season was on the line, so playing aggressively was their only option. Despite the attempt, they fell short and became the 14th team to be shut out by the Blue Streaks this season.

Although this is the team's 14th overall shutout, this is Jake Vogrin's 11th shutout this year. This shutout makes him the record holder for shutouts in a season by a Blue Streak.

"It is an honor to have such a high acknowledgement in front of other John Carroll greats," Vogrin stated. "I want to give a big thank you to the defense, as they were able to help me get such a remarkable feat. Although I get the acknowledgement, they deserve a lot of credit too."

John Carroll's 3-0 victory means they move onto the round of 32, where they will play John Hopkins University tomorrow evening.
