Women's Soccer Continues to Score Big in Win over Raiders in OAC Quarterfinal

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – You don't want to let the Blue Streaks get hot.

Tuesday's Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal marked the 20th game of the season for John Carroll Women's Soccer. Seven of the matches have been shutouts. In the other 13 games, the Blue Streaks have scored 36 goals.

The Blue Streaks were not shut out tonight.

John Carroll bore down on Mount Union from the very start of the match, firing up the offense for a 3-1 conquest. JCU moves onto the OAC Semifinal on Thursday to face off with Capital.

"I'm just excited," said Madyson Rosado after tabbing 3 points in the win. "We're playing together and working hard. Stepping together and working as a team is important. [For the OAC Semifinal] we need to be mentally prepared, and do what we need to do recovery-wise to be ready for Thursday."

The Blue Streaks came out aggressively in the opening minutes, as the hosts placed pressure on Mount Union's defense from the get-go. Madyson Rosado earned a corner and Emily Patrzyk tabbed the game's first shot in the third minute, though it sailed high. Mount Union broke the press in the fifth minute to garner a pair of corners, but nothing came of it.

In the 10th minute, the Blue Streaks' budding offensive star struck to break the tie.

Lauren Gumeny fired up a pass from the back. The 50/50 ball bounced off the head of a midfielder and bounded ahead towards the box. Madyson Rosado, the reigning OAC Offensive Player of the Week, chased it down to the edge of the box and settled it. The North Ridgeville native right-footed a beautiful shot low left corner to set the Blue Streaks ahead 1-0.

Rosado's ninth goal of the year was the second scored against the Purple Raiders this season.

Knowing that the Purple Raiders came one goal away from roaring back from a 4-goal deficit in the last match, the Blue Streaks did not ease off the gas.

Rosado peppered the Purple Raiders with shots in the ensuing minutes. The sophomore sent a pair of shots just wide left on promising chances.

The teams then traded possessions with some end-to-end action. But the back-and-forth play did not result in any shots for the next 15 minutes until a Mount Union shot in the 36th minute. Within 22 seconds, Emily Patrzyk counterattacked and fired a shot high.

Just over a minute later, Patrzyk did not miss.

From near midfield, Claire Hollern turned around and left footed a through ball ahead. The senior's pass slotted perfectly ahead up the left side for Patrzyk. The freshman phenom bent the ball under the arm of the keeper for a major insurance tally.

Patrzyk's goal not only stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute, but also propelled her atop the conference in goals with her 13th on the year.

The Blue Streaks remained in the lead at the break with the two-goal advantage.

Just over five minutes into the second half, the Blue & Gold added further to the lead.

Rosado again forced the action. The sophomore sensation charged up the right side, beating the defender with a nifty play. As she approached the keeper, she centered a pass to Grace Monnin. The senior did not hesitate, slotting the ball home past the goalie.

With Monnin's fourth goal of the season, the Blue Streaks charged ahead to 3-0.

Mount Union attempted to counterattack but did not have much success until too much time had elapsed for a comeback.

In the 78th minute, the ball bounded around in the box off players from each team not long after a corner kick. The Purple Raiders found the back of the net, as Andrea Decker re-tied Patrzyk for the lead in the conference for goals.

The game quickly became a physical affair, as the Purple Raiders desperately tried to extend their season, to no avail.

Stats-wise, the game was close, as Mount Union tried to mount the comeback. The Purple Raiders led in shots, 15-14, and shots on goal, 8-6.

Juliana Kontul anchored JCU in net with 7 saves, allowing just one goal.

The Blue Streaks advance to the OAC Tournament Semifinal at Capital on Thursday.
