Patrzyk Breaks Freshmen Scoring Record as Women's Soccer Bests the Berg

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll Women's Soccer has new faces making up for old grievances this season.

Last year, the Blue Streaks experienced some tough defeats. Two games into the conference slate, John Carroll has avenged two losses to Ohio Athletic Conference foes.

On Wednesday at Don Shula Stadium, the Blue Streaks handed Heidelberg University a 2-1 defeat after losing 3-0 in Tiffin last year. The Blue & Gold have now won four in a row overall.

In the opening minutes, the Blue Streaks and Student Princes exchanged off-target shots. About a third of the way through the half, Heidelberg struck first.

Heidelberg fired a through ball from near midfield. The perfect pass bounded above players from both teams who fought for the ball at the edge of the box. The keeper came to ward off the attack, but collided with the two field players. Amidst the chaos, Caitlyn Cross took advantage.

The freshman from Brook Park left-footed a lofter into the right side of the net, and just like that, the Student Princes enjoyed a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.

In the 19th minute, the Blue Streaks got a corner kick and Gabriella Walter hit a header just wide. About two minutes later, Madyson Rosado sent a shot on net, but the Student Princes stepped up.

Following a Heidelberg chance, Abby Smith lifted a beautiful shot that just doinked off the top of the crossbar in the 31st minute. She sent in another shot in the 34th minute. Julia Suttman also tabbed a pair of shots, but nothing came of it.

So, the Student Princes stood ahead after the opening half, 1-0.

But in the second half, the Blue Streaks came in hot.

John Carroll started testing the Student Princes in the 55th minute with a shot by Abby Smith. Then with 29 minutes exactly left in the match, the Blue Streaks struck.

From the left edge of the box, Madyson Rosado centered a pass to Grace Monnin. The senior took a touch, then passed it back to the freshman phenom, Emily Patrzyk. The Twinsburg native then rocketed a shot off the keeper's hands into the right side of the net for a beautiful goal.

Not only did her goal tie the match, but it broke a long-standing record. Patrzyk broke Julie Scaffidi's record of 10 goals in a season by a freshman. Without a doubt, Patrzyk, the reigning OAC Offensive Player of the Week, is a special talent.

"I am really proud of myself, but every single goal I scored was not by myself," said Patrzyk. "The team has been with me the whole way, there's always someone assisting me. I want to thank them more than anything."

Just over five minutes later, the Blue Streaks struck again.

Rosado continued her outstanding campaign with a marvelous goal. The sophomore fired a missile from about the 20-yard line over the outstretched hands of the keeper.

And just like that, the Blue Streaks stood ahead, 2-1, with 23:57 left to play.

Following the go-ahead goal, the Blue Streaks' defense prevented the visitors from getting much room. The Student Princes got a corner kick with a couple minutes left to play, but John Carroll cleared the ball on the set piece.

The Blue Streaks won on the stat sheet, as well. John Carroll outshot Heidelberg, 15-5, including shots on goal, 7-5.

Mackenzie Stease played the full 90 minutes in net, making three saves in the victory.

"We're very positive, very hyped," said Patrzyk. "Every win, we get more excited to play the next game. We're proud of ourselves. I'm proud of the way we're playing as a team, and I'm excited for the rest of the season."

With the win, the Blue Streaks advanced to 6-4-2 on the year. John Carroll now will prepare for another OAC foe on Saturday, Marietta, in a Saturday showdown under the lights.
