Volleyball Storms Past Muskingum, Kenyon to Claim #2 Seed in OAC Tournament

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- There was magic in the air at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Saturday.

John Carroll Volleyball secured home court advantage in next week's Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. And the Blue Streaks did it by defeating an OAC powerhouse.

The Blue Streaks left no doubt in a dominant sweep of Muskingum University, 3-0  (25-16, 27-25, 25-19).

In the last match of the day, John Carroll held strong against Kenyon College, winning 3-1 (25-12, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16).

JCU vs. Muskingum

Coming off of a 5 set thriller against Mount Union this past week, the Blue Streaks took that momentum and ran with it as they took a big lead early against Muskingum and kept it going throughout the entire first set.

John Carroll went up 6-1 right out of the gates against the Muskies, so Muskingum decided to call a timeout early against the red-hot Blue Streaks. Muskingum showed signs of life in the first set, mounting some smaller runs to keep the game close. The score got as close as 14-11 halfway through the first set.

Thanks to 6 service aces by the Blue Streaks in the first set, the hosts were able to keep the pressure on the Muskies as the lead kept growing. Abigail Kirk led the Blue Streaks in the first set with a very impressive 4 aces. Jennifer Folmer tallied 5 kills for the Blue Streaks, including the final point of the set to secure a win.

The Blue Streaks finished the first set with just as much confidence as they had in the beginning of the first set, finishing off the Muskies 25-16.

After the break, Muskingam came out firing as they took a 7-4 lead to start the second set, but the Blue Streaks made a run of their own to take their first lead of the set at 12-11, when Kirk tallied her fifth service ace of the game to give the Blue Streaks a 13-11 lead before a Muskingum timeout.

The rest of the second set stayed very close as the score was back and forth. Maddie Maziarz tallied her first service ace of the game and the team's 10th to tie the game up at 17. The Blue Streaks then went up 20-18 for their biggest lead of the set, which forced Muskingum to call a timeout.

Muskingum then went on a 4-0 run to take a 22-20 lead, forcing a Blue Streak timeout late in the second.

Down 24-21, the Blue Streaks rallied for 4 consecutive points, including one service ace by Ally Bartolone. Then with the game tied at 25, the Blue Streaks rallied for 2 points to win a very exciting second set, 27-25, for a 2-0 lead over the Muskies in front of a very loud John Carroll student crowd.

Through two sets, the story for the Blue Streaks was the service aces, as they were leading the service ace category, 11-0.

The Blue Streaks kept up the intensity that they finished the second set with, as they opened the third with a 5-1 lead, all 5 points scored by Ally Bartolone, including 2 more service aces.

Early in set three, Cassi Calamunci led the team with 8 kills and 9 points, she finished the game with 11. Folmer also had a good day with 9 kills.

The Blue Streaks kept their lead consistently out of reach throughout set three. When Muskingum took their second timeout of the set it was 20-15 Blue Streaks, but there was no stopping the Blue Streaks in set three as they finished off the Muskies, 25-19.

The Blue Streaks finished the match with 15 service aces, Ally Bartolone and Abigail Kirk tallied five each, Payton Miozzi and Lexi MacDonald grabbing two each, and Maddie Maziarz recording one.

Lexi MacDonald had a very impressive performance in the backcourt with 18 digs to lead the Blue Streaks. Calamunci and Payton Miozzi also had good days with 11 digs each.

Ally Bartolone provided a team-best 17 assists, with Maddie Maziarz contributing 14.

JCU vs. Kenyon

After sweeping Muskingum in the opening match of the tri-match, the John Carroll Women's Volleyball team wanted to end their regular season on a high note.

The Blue Streaks won in four sets versus the Kenyon Owls in a non-conference match, 3-1 (25-12, 25-15, 22-25, 25-16).

John Carroll dominated the first set, winning 25-12. The Blue Streaks got out ahead 6-3 before drawing a timeout by the Owls.

Errors by Kenyon put John Carroll up 8-3 before losing the serve. John Carroll began to run away with the set 17-5 before Kenyon attempted to cut into the lead for the Blue and Gold.

The Owls continued to hack away at the John Carroll lead, but a kill by Abigail Kirk claimed set one for the Blue Streaks.

Both teams came out strong in set two. Points went back and forth until the Blue Streaks began to pull away to 10-4.

Kenyon rallied to narrow the score to 10-8 before an error by Kenyon gave the serve back to John Carroll. The Blue and Gold improved their lead to 15-9 before losing the serve on an attack error.

Both teams battled through tough volleys, but strong performances by Kirk, Kendra Dziubinski, and the rest of the Blue Streak defense held firm in the front.

John Carroll took advantage of errors by the Owls, taking set two in another dominating performance, winning 25-15.

In set three, the Blue Streaks got out ahead 2-0, but the Owls were determined not to let this set get away. For the first time in the match, the Owls were up 4-3 until a kill by Cassi Calamunci earned the point back.

Kenyon took a 9-4 lead before a kill by Steph Conley gave John Carroll the serve. The Owls were resilient in set three, earning another three points before the Blue and Gold got back on the board to make the set 12-7.

Both teams battled to make the set 19-14 before strong offense by the Blue Streaks tightened the score to 19-18 in Kenyon's favor. The Owls capitalized on their momentum in the third set to make it 21-18, before a kill by Jennifer Follmer earned back the serve.

A service ace by Maddie Maziarz energized the Blue and Gold to help cut Kenyon's lead to 22-21. John Carroll's efforts in set three were not enough in a close 25-22 set.

Set four started close tied at two before John Carroll pulled away to take a 8-2 lead. The Owls took advantage of Blue Streak errors to make it a 8-5 set. Kenyon attempted to catch up, but the Blue Streaks maintained a lead in the fourth set to win 25-16.

Calamunci led the Blue Streaks with 14 kills, with Kirk and Dziubinski at seven apiece. Lexi MacDonald led the team with 21 digs. Calamunci also led the team in points with 16.5 in the match. Ally Bartolone led the Blue Streaks with 25 assists, breaking 3,000 for her career.

The John Carroll Volleyball team will now be heading to the playoffs.

The Blue Streaks clinched the No. 2 seed with the victory today, and will host an opponent to be determined on Thursday, November 3.
