Blue Streaks Defense Holds Strong Against Purple Raiders

By: Michael Gallipoli

University Heights OHA rainy evening in University Heights set the stage for a classic rivalry game between John Carroll and Mount Union.

As the rain fell, the match was underway with The Blue Streaks starting fast paced. Just three minutes in, John Carroll pieced together a nice attack, where Brenden Swann took a shot that was turned away by Mount Union's Lucas Fields.

In the 39th minute, John Carroll mustered together a beautiful display of passing deep in Mount Union territory leading to a goal by graduate student Michael Burrington, assisted by Daniel Kalic

Moments later, Mount Union put together a nice attack off a clever through ball, however, it was no match as Noah Lindon made a wonderful slide tackle to stop the Purple Raider attack.

The Blue Streaks would maintain majority of possession time in the first half, allowing only one shot to Mount Union and would go into break leading 1-0.

The half would start off slow, with back and forth attacks from both teams with nothing to show for.

Mount Union would create a nice chance in the 59th minute, but the shot from Jon Szydlowski would go wide left of the goal. A minute later, another opportunity would arise for the Purple Raiders where Rylan Wikle would take a shot that sailed over the crossbar.

In the 69th minute, a deflected pass would lead to a scary counter attack for Mount Union, but Jake Vogrin would stand tall to the challenge.

Just six minutes later, a ball deflecting off the defense of the Purple Raiders would find the foot of Jack Foht, who would put on a nice display of dribbling and take a strike from the left side of the box finding the back of the net.

Mount Union did their best to put together one last effort in the 83rd minute, where a tough shot from Ryan Sarkisian would be turned away by Vogrin once again.

John Carroll would end up on top with a final score of 2-0. Vogrin would add another clean sheet, making it his tenth of this season.

The Blue Streak's defense has been stout allowing two goals in their last nine matches and eight shutouts in that timeframe. The clean sheet tonight set a new program record for shutouts in a season with 12.

John Carroll's last regular season game is Saturday October 29th, as they will host Muskingum for a home match at 7 p.m.
