Women's Soccer Scuffles at Baldwin Wallace in Road Loss

BEREA, Ohio -- The Ohio Athletic Conference is a funny thing. The October grind can lift you to the highest of highs and drop you to the lowest of lows.

John Carroll Women's Soccer experienced the latter on Wednesday.

The Blue Streaks entered riding a 3-game conference winning streak. The Blue & Gold departed Berea with a 4-1 defeat.

The opening 7 minutes were absolutely thrilling. The first action of the game was a shot and goal by Baldwin Wallace's Sydney Rice just 3:51 into the match. The fourth minute goal provided a 1-0 lead for the hosts. The Blue Streaks needed little time to author a response. At exactly seven minutes into the match, the Blue Streaks got on the board.

Meredith Coloian tallied the first goal of her young career in the seventh minute. The Avon native's first tally came at a great time, as the goal tied the contest at one.

The teams traded shots over the next 18 minutes. Jennifer Crowley placed one on cage, followed by a Rice shot that Mackenzie Stease turned away. An Emily Patrzyk shot followed, and then the Yellow Jackets peppered the Blue & Gold crease with shots. In the 27th minute, the Yellow Jackets broke through again. Mary Litzinger provided the go-ahead goal.

The remainder of the half was not without action, though it was without more goals. Each keeper made a couple saves to keep the game at 2-1 Baldwin Wallace.

Some fouls and a yellow card assessed to each team characterized the opening stages of the second half. The Blue Streaks notched a trio of shots, but BW's Katie Scott stepped up every time. The hosts' defensive stops made the ensuing action that more heart-rending for the Blue Streaks. Within the span of three minutes, the Yellow Jackets nabbed two goals.

Maddie Farrell scored BW's third goal of the night off an assist by Rice in the 68th minute, and Litzinger iced the cake in the 70th minute. And just like that, all hopes of a comeback were dashed for the Blue Streaks.

John Carroll did notch some shots, as Lizzie Woo, Alli Malinky, and Patrzyk all sent chances on net. But this night belonged to the Yellow Jackets.

The shots did favor BW, 25-14, but both teams got 12 shots on goal. The Yellow Jackets got more corners, 5-2, but the fouls were even.

The Blue Streaks, now 7-5-2 on the campaign, will need to bounce back quickly. John Carroll heads to Ohio Northern on Saturday. The 7-1-4 Polar Bears were picked to finish second in the conference, just one point behind Otterbein in the preseason coaches' poll. The Polar Bears have won the last nine meetings.
