Men's Soccer Downed by No. 13 OWU on the Road

DELAWARE, Ohio -- John Carroll University Men's Soccer fell to 2-2-2 after a 2-0 loss to the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops Saturday night. OWU improved to 5-0-1 and recorded their third consecutive shutout.

The Battling Bishops came into the game undefeated and No. 13 in the latest Division III coaches poll. JCU falls to 0-1-1 against current ranked opponents on the season. However, the Blue Streaks do have a win at then No. 10 Kenyon to open the season.

The game started fast, and was a physical match from kickoff to the final whistle.

OWU was awarded a corner in the fifth minute but the JCU defense stood tall. Will Harr and Chase Fernkorn each recorded a shot on net in the early going, but goalies Connor Gynn of JCU and Mason Taylor of OWU got their first saves of the night just a minute apart.

Jared Ianiro had a chance shortly after a free kick from an OWU foul around midfield, but it sailed over the crossbar and the first 15 minutes went scoreless. The Battling Bishops came out physical and aggressive on the defensive end, having six fouls in the first 15 minutes. Gynn recorded his second save of the night in the 19th minute on a shot by Franklin Rodriguez as the game stood scoreless through the first 20 minutes.

OWU's defensive aggressiveness soon turned into offense. They had eight shots, two on goal in the first 33 minutes of the game. Daniel Kalic and Brendan Swann each had shots towards the end of the first half, but they were either blocked or sailed wide of the net. At the half, OWU held the advantage in shots over the Blue Streaks 8-5, yet had 10 fouls.

The Battling Bishops came out of the halftime break and put pressure on Gynn early. Despite picking up three fouls in the first five minutes and a shot by Jack Foht, the Battling Bishops transitioned to offense again and this time Franklin Rodriguez found Jaggar Brooker with space to give them a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute.

Benjamin Hryszko tried his best to answer back just moments later, but his shot was saved by Taylor. Immediately the Bishops put pressure on Gynn and the Blue Streaks' defense. Will Harr put a shot on net which was saved by Gynn, but resulted in a corner kick, and another shot by Charlie Riddle followed.

After a foul on JCU, the Bishops were able to beat the defense once again. Hector Gomez put a shot on goal, but their last line of defense in Gynn made his fourth save of the night. Gynn's record as a starter was 1-1-1 coming into the game.

Ohio Wesleyan essentially clinched the game with just 12 minutes remaining. A nifty set of passes by Franklin Rodriguez and Hector Gomez set up a goal by Mickey Cockerell to make it 2-0.

John Carroll was unable to respond, as they did not have a shot the final 20 minutes, and had just one shot on goal the entire second half. An impressive defensive performance by the Battling Bishops did include 17 fouls, but they allowed only nine shots, just two on goal, and not even a corner kick opportunity surrendered in the second half.

The Blue Streaks now have a -1 goal differential on the season, and have scored just seven goals in six games, while picking up nine yellow cards on the season. JCU prides themselves on a tough out of conference schedule as they have another ranked opponent in their non-conference schedule in #15 University of Chicago next Saturday. First, they will face off against Denison on the road for the second game of a 3-game road stretch on Wednesday, Sept. 22.
