Zimmerman Provides Game-Winning Goal in 2OT Conquest for Women's Soccer

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- 107 minutes and 40 seconds of grit and determination. That is how long it took for the Blue Streaks' effort to finally pay off, as Madison Zimmerman notched the lone goal of the game in thrilling fashion.

John Carroll University Women's Soccer, coming in hot on a three game winning streak, could not be stopped, as they played with tremendous effort on the defensive side of the field the entire game, ultimately leading to the team's fourth victory of the young season.

The Blue Streaks bested Allegheny on the road on Saturday, 1-0, in an overtime thriller.

To begin the game, Allegheny came out firing early with Emily Orr notching the first shot of the match just 38 seconds in. JCU goalkeeper Danielle DelGiudice was able to corral the shot that went to the right of the post, halting any chance of an early goal from the Gators.

Four minutes later, Allegheny's Julieta Schworm possessed the ball in the box and registered a shot, but the Blue Streaks' defense stopped any chance of a second opportunity as defenders Claire Hollern and Lizzie Woo combined to help clear the ball and give John Carroll possession once more.

In the eighth minute, Brittany Dufalla gave John Carroll their first shot of the night, missing wide. After a shot wide of goal by the Gator's Natasha Rosa, the Blue Streaks went right back to attacking with a trio of shots, one by each of Juliana Kontul, Grace Monnin, and Maura Palmer. Monnin and Palmer's were wide of the goal, but Kontul's shot did require a save by Allegheny goalkeeper Gabby Culotta.

After a yellow card was given to Allegheny's Schworm in the 23rd minute, both teams traded possessions several times. In the 33rd minute, Dufalla blasted another shot on goal, requiring another save by Culotta.

With just seconds left in the first half, John Carroll's Julia Suttman was able to maneuver around defenders to get a final shot off, but Culotta once again answered the call, recording her third save of the half.

Starting off the second half, Allegheny made a switch at goalkeeper, substituting Kaitlynn Rees in for Culotta. The Gators came out with a more aggressive approach as they registered two shots on goal within the first twelve minutes of the half, both of which were stopped by DelGiudice.

This led to the Blue Streaks trying to get Dufalla a couple of offensive opportunities. The first came on a shot in the 61st minute that was wide of the goal. The second came about three minutes later on a long pass upfield to Dufalla in which the referees called her offsides, stopping the JCU forward before she could get another shot off.

In the 73rd minute, Allegheny threatened the Blue Streaks multiple times, with all opportunities denied by the stout John Carroll defense. Two shots on goal were tallied during this window of offensive opportunity, but both were saved by DelGiudice on tremendous effort plays.

Despite both teams having several opportunities off of corner kicks, neither was able to get much more going on offense until the final two minutes of regulation. However, in those final two minutes, Allegheny threatened with three shots, but all were wide of the goal.

The score stood deadlocked at 0-0 entering overtime.

Early in extra time, John Carroll went right to work on offense, as Macey Malinky fired a long shot that was saved by Rees. A minute later, Blue Streaks fans held their breath as Allegheny had what might have been the best look of the evening to that point. The Gators' Ellie Hamilton missed a header from just a few yards out, narrowly hitting the ball too far to the left of the goal. The bonus ten minutes of gameplay were not enough, so the game headed to a second period of extra play.

In the second extended-time period, the Blue Streaks dominated possession early on, with Malinky missing on a shot wide of goal. Dufalla also had a possession only a few yards away from goal but was swarmed by Gator defenders before she could make a shot attempt. In the 104th minute, Julia Suttman launched a deep shot that was on target but saved by Rees.

Shortly thereafter, the Gators had two shots on goal, both saved with ease by DelGiudice.

After the teams traded possessions, Dufalla made a magnificent move on defense to steal the ball away from the Gators. This led to a tremendous downfield pass to Madison Zimmerman, who made a sharp cut to the right around a defender and drilled the game-winning goal into the back right of the net. As soon as the shot went in, her teammates erupted and she was swarmed in triumphant fashion.

Not only was this the first goal of the match for the Blue Streaks, this was also the first goal of Zimmerman's John Carroll career, and it could not have come at a better time. Zimmerman, a graduate transfer from Heidelberg, had entered the match in the 74th minute as a substitute and came up clutch for the Blue Streaks.

For the game, DelGiudice finished with nine saves on nine opportunities while the Blue Streaks as a team finished with seventeen shots (six on goal).

The Blue Streaks (4-1) will be back in action on Wednesday, September 15, as they travel to Gambier, Ohio, to take on Kenyon College.
