Hryszko's Heroics in Overtime Provides Brilliant Win over Wooster for Men's Soccer

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- All great stories have a hero.

In the second home edition of the John Carroll University Men's Soccer season, victory seemed set in stone for the Blue Streaks with only two minutes left to play.

However, the Fighting Scots of Wooster flipped the script in the 88th minute, scoring a goal and deflating the air out of Don Shula Stadium to force overtime.

Enter Ben Hryszko.

With just over five minutes left in the first extra period, the fifth-year senior headed in a crosser from James Hoover to give JCU its first home victory of the season, 2-1.

"As soon as I came in the game, I knew I had to make a difference and that was one of the ways I could do it for my team," said Hryszko after the match. "We are really looking for a win right now and we've been struggling the last couple of games and this was a big game. It was good to turn it around at home in front of our fans."

Both teams could not find many chances early in the first half, but Wooster had two strong headers in the 31st and 32nd minute that sailed just above the crossbar.

The Fighting Scots had another opportunity to find the back of the net with a little more than four minutes remaining in the half, but Blue Streak goalie Connor Robinson made a fantastic save on a shot skidding towards the lower right corner.

Wooster outshot JCU 7-5 in the first stanza and also had more shots on goal, 3-2.

More chances continued to elude both squads until the 70th minute when the Blue Streaks finally cashed in.

Daniel Kalic sent a beautiful pass from just outside the box into Brendan Swann, who headed the ball in the upper right-hand corner to give JCU a 1-0 lead.

When the game seemed in reach for John Carroll, the Fighting Scots caught JCU napping.

In the 88th minute, a foul was called on the Blue Streaks deep in their zone, setting up a Wooster free-kick. Jack Giloth sent the ball in and Max Hill finished it off by heading the ball into the upper right-hand corner to knot the game at 1-1 and force overtime.

Just 14 seconds into the extra period, Robinson made a huge save for JCU on a Kyle Stringer shot from just outside the box that kept the match tied.

Four minutes later, Hryszko headed in the game-winning goal as the Blue and Gold snapped a two-game winless streak.

"They played very well tonight, especially in the last 30 minutes of the second half and the overtime," JCU head coach Dejan Mladenovic said, who earned the first home victory of his career. "I felt that it would have been a crime if they did not get a good result tonight and really happy that they pulled it off."

John Carroll and Wooster shot an even 12-12 for the match, but the Blue Streaks had more shots on net 7-5.

JCU will look to improve their winning ways as they stay home to take on Case Western Reserve in another non-conference matchup on Wednesday, September 15 at 7 p.m.
