Volleyball Bests Wooster on the Road to Begin the Fall Campaign

WOOSTER, Ohio -- Wooster, Ohio -- John Carroll University Volleyball started off the fall season strong in the first game of the year against the Fighting Scots of Wooster with a 3-1 road victory.

Following an 8-11 season in the spring, John Carroll entered the season hungry. The competitiveness in the preseason translated to a season-opening win on Wednesday.

The Blue Streaks started off by winning the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-22. In the third set, the Fighting Scots answered back, winning the set, 25-19. The Blue Streaks didn't back down, and came back to win the fourth set, 25-15.

Once the Streaks found their groove in the first set, nothing was stopping them. John Carroll had five straight points with the perfect combination of amazing defense and sneaky offensive plays.

Senior Brooke Hjerpe put up some major blocks to hold off the Fighting Scots early. Wooster answered, closing the gap to within three points towards the end of the set. Senior Cassi Calamunci shut down the Fighting Scots with a kill to end the set.

The second set ran similar to the first, with a lot of impressive plays from both sides of the net. Sophomore Jennifer Follmer highlighted the set with her talent both offensively and defensively. The Cleveland native had no problem blocking the Scots, and then shortly after coming back with a key kill.

The Fighting Scots put their foot on the gas in an attempt to catch up to the Blue Streaks, consistently leading in the third set. The Blue Streaks came back to tie the set, 5-5, which then began a back-and-forth fight for the win. JCU fell short in the third set, 25-19.

In the final set of today's matchup, the Blue Streaks were on fire. JCU pulled ahead of the Fighting Scots, 14-6, thanks to key kills by Cassi Calamunci. The Blue Streaks didn't ease up as they collected five points in a row, including kills by Calamunci, sophomore Abigail Kirk, and senior Carleen Ellerbruch. Wooster tried to close the gap and answered with five points in a row, but that didn't phase the Blue Streaks. JCU took the set with a final score of 25-15.

Calamunci led the Blue and Gold in kills with 13, followed by Kailee Herbst and Follmer both with 8. Senior Ally Bartolone led the way with 22 assists, followed by sophomore Maddie Maziarz with 13. Bartolone also topped the team with 15 digs, while Anna Coughlin had 11.

The Blue Streaks are back in action in the hopes to extend their winning streak at Case Western Reserve University with a doubleheader matchup on Friday, September 3. JCU will be facing Bethany and Earlham Colleges starting at 5:30pm.
