Rivalry Win Continues Outstanding Season for Women's Lacrosse

BEREA, Ohio -- The best season in the John Carroll University Women's Lacrosse record book continued on Wednesday night, as the Blue Streaks came out victorious for the 12th straight game of the 2021 season.

On Wednesday, the undefeated Blue Streaks faced off against crosstown and Ohio Athletic Conference rival Baldwin Wallace University. John Carroll's undefeated season continued, as they vanquished the Yellow Jackets, 15-5.

The key to the win was John Carroll wasting no time as soon as the clock started. Just 12 seconds into the game, Emma Workman wasted no time at all to put the Blue Streaks up 1-0.

The scoring continued, as the Blue Streaks went on a 3-0 run against the Yellow Jackets. The goals were courtesy of Workman, Colleen Grombala and Jenna Ginsberg. The run came to an end when Deanna Loukas scored the first goal for Baldwin Wallace at the 18:22 mark of the first half.

John Carroll's response was to burn a timeout immediately. Soon after, Kendall Gessner tallied her first goal of the game off of a free position at 14:24. Halfway through the first half, John Carroll led 4-1.

Baldwin Wallace continued to fight in the first half, cutting the score down to 4-2 in the first.

The offensive flood gates started to open for the Blue Streaks courtesy of Carly Ross and Grombala right before halftime. Ross hit back-to-back goals at the 5:16 and 4:06 marks of the first half. Following Ross, Grombala did the same exact feat, scoring goals at the 3:50 mark and 2:50 marks, gaining a first-half hat trick. Baldwin Wallace would find the net one more time, but John Carroll held an 8-3 advantage over the Yellow Jackets as the teams headed into the locker room.

John Carroll came out of the break on a scoring streak again. Jill Jarem, Lainey Donalson, Olivia Gerlach and Grombala all scored, giving JCU a 6-0 scoring run out of the gates.

Baldwin Wallace ended the Blue Streaks scoring streak in the second half at the 12:18 mark when Avri DeBevoise found the net. JCU led 14-4 at this point. John Carroll held on to win the game by a 10-goal margin, 15-5.

Current OAC Offensive Player of the Week Colleen Grombala led the team in scoring, contributing significantly to the win with 6 goals and 9 shots. She has 68 goals throughout the first 12 games.

The Blue Streaks were anchored in cage by Kaleigh Kotula with seven saves. Grombala (5), Donalson (4), Workman (3), and Mary Doherty (3) dominated on draw controls, 15-6. Doherty tabbed a game-high 4 groundballs. John Carroll outshot the Yellow Jackets 42-15 and grabbed 18 ground balls compared to Baldwin Wallace's 12.

With the win, John Carroll improves to 12-0 on the season. John Carroll will look to continue their firing hot streak on Wednesday, April 14 against Marietta College. The faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
