Wilmington Stymies Baseball in Home Sweep

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio --  With the season's end in sight, John Carroll University Baseball hoped to take care of business at home on Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Blue Streaks, the gray skies matched the team's fortunes, as the hosts dropped both games to Wilmington, 3-1 and 17-4.

The Blue Streaks fall to 11-13-1 overall, 8-12-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

Game 1

Poor weather conditions in Wilmington forced the Blue Streaks and Fightin' Quakers to switch venues for Saturday and Sunday, so the Blue Streaks played the hosts today. Mitchell Midea provided plenty of hospitality early on, welcoming his guests with spots on the bench.

Midea mowed through the Wilmington lineup in the early going. The John Carroll ace did not allow a hit until the top of the fourth, striking out six in the first four frames.

Henry Haracz singled in the first and Bennett Cavaretta singled in the second, but neither scored. The Blue Streaks scratched a run across in the third.

Haracz doubled to center with 1 out in the inning. A Sam Heaton groundout sent Haracz to third, and Joe Olsavsky doubled to plate JCU's leadoff hitter. Olsavsky stole third, but Wilmington starter Luke Chappie garnered a strikeout to emerge with only a run to show for it.

Midea kept cruising, tabbing two more strikeouts in the fifth and another two in the sixth, stranding a runner apiece in each inning. Wilmington finally broke through in the top of the seventh.

After Midea sent the first batter packing, Wilmington's pinch hitter drew a walk. A double set a pair of runners in scoring position. Midea allowed a grounder to second for the second out of the inning, trading a run for an out. Bobby Bell then went to the bullpen, calling upon John Merrill. Unfortunately, the Fightin' Quakers got another run on a single, snagging a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

Victor Glaser singled in the seventh and Haracz walked in the eighth, but neither scored, as a controversial tag call at second in the eighth ended a potential JCU rally.

The Blue Streaks ran into trouble in the ninth. Wilmington got the leadoff man aboard with an error. A groundout set a runner in scoring position, and a single up the middle got an insurance run. Jack Bennett entered and tabbed a strikeout, but it didn't matter. Justin Hanley doubled in the ninth, but was left stranded, and Wilmington walked away with a win.

Midea accepted the loss despite a masterful 12 strikeout effort, allowing just 2 runs on 2 hits. Chappie snagged the win, with a 6-hit complete game.

Haracz led the offense with a 2-for-3 game with a run and a walk, along with a pair of stolen bases.

Game 2

The backend of the twinbill proved to be a tough one for the Blue Streaks.

Wilmington jumped on the hosts early, forcing out starter Nicholas Michel early. The Fightin' Quakers managed to plate 5 runs before the inning concluded with Sam Basso stanching the bleeding.

Sam Heaton drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first, advancing to second on a wild pitch and to third on a high throw. Haracz got him home with an RBI groundout to short. Hanging a crooked number on the board, JCU trailed 5-1.

Basso cruised in the second, but so did Wilmington starter Kaleb Stines. Wilmington picked up its sixth run in the third, thanks to a pair of singles.

After a 1-2-3 JCU bottom of the third, Wilmington's offense kicked it into high gear in a marathon top of the fourth. The Fightin' Quakers scored 6 runs on 3 hits and 2 errors, getting in the driver's seat and taking the keys from the Blue Streaks.

Bennett Cavaretta jacked a 2-run homer to right center after Haracz reached on error, narrowing the margin to 12-3. A Heaton double and Olsavsky single dropped the deficit by one run. But Wilmington tallied another run in the sixth and four more in the eighth, finishing off a 17-4 conquest.

Five different JCU batters tabbed hits, but Stines got the 8-inning complete game win. Errors haunted the Blue Streaks, as only 7 of Wilmington's 17 runs were earned.

John Carroll will look to get back on track Sunday, as the Blue Streaks head south to face Wilmington twice more in a 1 and 4 p.m. twinbill.
