Hanley's Stellar Day Earns Blue Streaks Win in Game 2, JCU Drops Game 1

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- If you're a fan of offensive oriented baseball, Schweickert Field was the place to be on Sunday.

John Carroll University Baseball split a twinbill matchup with Baldwin Wallace in a double-header matchup that featured 49 runs — and it only happened in 15 total innings. The Yellow Jackets took game one, 13-9. The Blue Streaks won game two in six innings, 15-11.

With the win, John Carroll improves to 10-8-1 on the season and 5-2-1 on the season against crosstown-rival Baldwin Wallace.

"After the disappointing turn of events yesterday and losing game one, we rebounded and showed the maturity to come back and win game two," said Head Coach Bobby Bell

The junior duo of Victor Glaser and Justin Hanley had huge days in the respective games.

Game 1

In a game of 22 runs that Baldwin Wallace won 13-9, the Yellow Jackets prevailed with a late stretch of scores in the final four innings.

Although the Yellow Jackets had the best of the scoring late, the Blue Streaks had the better of it through the first three innings, as JCU held a 6-2 lead.

In the second stanza, the scoring began. Tyler Cyrus led off the inning with a double to right-center. Two at-bats later, Victor Glaser knocked in Cyrus with a double of his own to tie the game at 1. Later on, Glaser scored off a wild pitch to give the Blue and Gold the early 2-1 lead.

With one out in the third inning, JCU shifted into gear with three singles that loaded the bases. Glaser came up big once again with an RBI single. Then, John Carroll's next three runs came off two walks with the bases juiced and a wild pitch. Baldwin Wallace's mistakes provided the Blue Streaks with a 6-2 lead that lasted until the sixth inning.

From there, the Yellow Jackets stung back with two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh.

Despite being down by 9-6, the Blue Streaks rallied back after the seventh inning stretch. Justin Hanley had a lead-off double to begin the inning and a single from Cyrus put Hanley one base away from scoring. Glaser had yet another RBI single that cut the BW lead to two. Michael Anderson walked with the bases loaded to make the score 9-8. Anderson walked three times in total for the game.

The Yellow Jackets distanced themselves on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth that put John Carroll down by five heading into the final half-inning. Glaser blasted a home run that narrowed BW's lead to one but JCU did not have any runs left.

Glaser had a career day, going 3-4 with four RBI and only a triple away from hitting the cycle. Cyrus also had three base hits, including the lead-off double in the second inning.

Game Two

For the first time in at least a decade, a 10-run opening inning propelled the Blue Streaks to avenge a loss in the first game. In total, Hanley gave six reasons why JCU earned the victory.

Henry Haracz led off the game with a triple to right field and scored on the play, marking an inside-the-park home run. Two batters later, Hanley cleared the left field wall for a 3-run homework that put the Blue Streaks 4-2. Later in the inning, Hanley had a two RBI single that finalized the 10 runs scored.

"I got behind early in the count," Hanley said. "He threw it down the middle and hung a slider. I hit it well."

Bennett Cavaretta had an RBI double, and Anderson had an RBI sac-fly in the stanza.

The Yellow Jackets buzzed to score seven runs over the next three innings but a two-run bottom of the fourth to go back ahead 12-9. Olsavsky led off the inning with a double and the next batter, Hanley, hit a double that scored Olsavsky. Jake Connery singled up the middle that scored Hanley to close out the scoring in the stanza.

Like they did beforehand, Baldwin Wallace did not let up. The Yellow Jackets stung twice in the top of the sixth but as they did all game, the Blue Streaks responded.

A pair of wild pitches in the bottom of the sixth scored Olsavsky and Fields and Daugenti had an RBI double in the middle of the inning. With the sun setting and the rain picking up, the game was called with no outs.

Hanley had his first four-hit game of his career, going 4-4 at the plate with 6 RBI. Olsavsky notched a pair of doubles and drew a walk for a 3-4 day in the batter's box. Connery went 2-4 and had an RBI.

Nicholas Michel earned his first save of the inning and third of his career and Henry Darrow earned the first win of his Blue Streak career.
