Women's Lacrosse Roars to Home Rivalry Win over BW

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- A flurry of early goals left no doubt in Wednesday's matchup of crosstown lacrosse rivals John Carroll University and Baldwin Wallace University.

The Blue Streaks rolled to a 19-1 victory in the friendly confines of Don Shula Stadium on March 3. With the lopsided win, John Carroll advances to 3-0 on the year.

Colleen Grombala needed just 28 seconds to find twine, as revenge was fresh on the team's mind after a 9-8 loss in 2019. The graduate student fired in a free position shot with precision to grab the lead for JCU. The Blue Streaks didn't look back after the early spark.

"The returners who were here in 2019 remember the sting of the loss we had to BW in 2019," said Head Coach Rachel Dell. "We fired from all cylinders from the first minute. Winning every draw helped us control the pace of play and let us play the fast game we like."

Within the next 67 seconds, the Blue Streaks scored three more goals. Jenna Ginsberg, Alex Heishman, and Emma Workman all tallied markers. After a three minute drought, the Blue and Gold went on another scoring spree, notching four more goals in a 61-second span. Kendall Gessner hit a free position shot, Lainey Donalson scored a pretty goal on a Carly Ross helper, Ginsberg connected on a Workman assist, and Heishman netted another with help from Ginsberg.

The score remained 8-0 JCU until the 14:34 mark, as John Carroll dominated possession but had shots cling off both posts and off the goalie. After peppering the net with shots, the Blue Streaks got back on the board with a Gessner tally off a Grombala assist. Emma Workman set the margin at 10-0 with 11:34 left in the first half, starting the running clock.

Avri DeBevoise got the Yellow Jackets on the board with 5:01 left in the half. Ginsberg responded a minute later with her hat trick goal. Shannon Burdick finished off the first-half scoring with a goal off a Heishman assist. JCU enjoyed a 12-1 lead at halftime.

Olivia Gerlach and Claire Mezzoprete kickstarted the JCU offense in the second half with two goals apiece in the first 13 minutes of the second half. Heishman scored yet another at 15:04 and Burdick deked and deposited a highlight worthy goal at 11:11 for an 18-1 lead. Lauren Schwartz finished off the scoring with a free position goal with 1:34 left.

Ginsberg and Heishman each led the team with 3 goals. Ginsberg also headed the stat column in ground balls with 3. Grombala topped the team with 8 points, with 1 goal and 7 assists, a personal best. She also had a game-best 6 draw controls, as JCU swept draw controls, 18-0.

"Colleen Grombala had a great game," said Dell. "We are very happy with how she spread her scoring tonight. "I am very happy with the amount of assists we had tonight. Our goal was to pick apart their zone and find the open girl."

Kaleigh Kotula made four saves and allowed just one goal in the win.

"She was great in cage," Dell remarked. "This is the best I've seen her play."

Plenty of other Blue Streaks deserve kudos for about as a complete of a win as you'll see.

"Maddy Veto and Carly Ross were huge in transition for us tonight. Their confidence and speed helped keep the ball in our offensive end," said Dell. "Overall, I'm happy with every single player. I don't know that we have ever executed a game plan as perfectly as we have tonight. I have no complaints."

The Blue Streaks now own the series advantage, 4-3, avenging the loss in the team's last meeting on May 3, 2019. Interestingly enough, neither team has won more than one game in a row in the series.

Don Shula Stadium will be the site of JCU's next contest on Saturday, an OAC showdown with Otterbein.
