Road Trip to Westerville Ends in Sweep for JCU Softball

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- In a 4-game stretch away from home to start 2021, the John Carroll University Softball squad has struggled to find its footing.

In a road trip today to play Otterbein University on Saturday, the Blue Streaks didn't get the win they were looking for.

Instead, the Cardinals earned a sweep of the Blue and Gold, 5-2 and 9-0.

In the first game of the twinbill, Otterbein's offense made an impact early on. An RBI grounder by Isabelle Fisher opened the scoring. Moments later, Katrina Wierzbick clubbed a 2-run homer to push the score to 3-0 after two innings.

Otterbein forced starter Danielle Orendi from the game in the third. Orendi only allowed three hits, but Otterbein made the most of its early opportunities.

Madison Eagle entered in relief in the fourth, allowing a run on an RBI sacrifice fly and a Fisher single. Gracie Bressoud tossed out a Cardinal at the plate, but the Cardinals' 5-0 advantage would be insurmountable.

The Blue Streaks did fight, with a run in the fifth and seventh innings. Kristen Jesberger knocked in Bressoud on a single to center in the fifth and Crista Nativio knocked in Kasyn Scarantine on a single to right center in the seventh. But Fisher held on in the seventh, clinching a 5-2 win for Otterbein.

The second contest of the doubleheader was all Otterbein.

The Cardinals scored early and often in the backend game. The hosts notched runs in each inning: 3 in the 1st inning, 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd, and 3 in the 4th. Katie DeBord started the game, and absorbed the loss.

Eagle took the mound in relief in the fourth, and allowed a few runs.

With the offense going cold in Game #2, the game ended early after five innings with a 9-0 Otterbein conquest.

Eagle pitched well on the mound, while Bressoud, Nativio, and Jesberger hit well at the plate as bright spots in defeat.

Despite the losses, the season is still young. The Blue Streaks will have plenty of opportunities to rebound, starting with a home doubleheader on Sunday at 1 and 3:30 p.m. at Bracken Field for the team's home opener.
