Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss of the Year, Falling to CWRU

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- On a cloudy day in Cleveland, the John Carroll University Men's Basketball team took on the Spartans of Case Western Reserve University in an East side battle. The Blue Streaks entered the game 4-0, looking to build off two encouraging weekends in New York, but were punched in the mouth early and often by a scorching shooting afternoon from the Spartans and could never recover, losing by a final score of 111-82.

The story of both halves for the Blue Streaks was early scoring from Case Western Reserve. The Spartans came out on fire in the first, quickly taking a 12-5 lead in the first five minutes, attacking the Blue Streaks on offense. CWRU shot a scorching 17-of-29 from three for the game, and looked like they couldn't miss a shot early in the first half. The Blue Streaks eventually got their looks, particularly from Chase Toppin (10 points, 7 assists) and Jackson Sartain (12 points), getting crucial layups to keep the game from slipping away. The Blue and Gold got as close as 8 points down late in the first half, but couldn't close the gap, entering the break trailing, 55-41.

The second half carried much the same tone, seeing the Spartans come out with more energy than the first half, going on a quick 10-0 run to extend the lead to 24, and the Spartans never looked back. Griffin Kornaker (7 points, 13 assists) gave the Blue and Gold fits, consistently getting to the basket and finding open players for shots. Case Western had five players in double figures, with nearly the entire team contributing points. JCU once again had trouble on both ends of the floor, and couldn't get anything going on offense. The lead never shrunk to less than 25 for the majority of the 2nd half, and the Spartans cruised to a 111-82 victory over the Blue and Gold.

The Blue Streaks had a balanced afternoon from the stat sheet. JCU shot 43% from the field on 33-of-77, including 8-of-31 from 3. David Gentry led the Blue Streaks in scoring with 16 points. Sartain and Toppin chipped in 12 and 10 respectively, Eric Hanna adding 8, Mason Trubisky netting 7 points, and a host of Blue Streaks at 5 points.

For the Spartans, it felt like every shot was falling. Case Western shot an impeccable 60% from the field at 45-of-75, including the aforementioned 17-of-29 from 3. Robert Faller lead all scores with 25 points on 10-of-13 from the field, and 5-of-6 from 3. Mitch Prendergast and Umar Rashid both chipped in 16 points, going 7-of-11 from 3 combined. Cole Frilling added 11 points, Hunter Drenth contributed 10, and several Spartans had a bucket or too.

Looking ahead, OAC play begins for the Blue Streaks next weekend, as they travel to Muskingum to take on the Fighting Muskies on December 4.
