Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day with Sweep of the Pioneers

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The John Carroll Volleyball senior class went out in winning style on Senior Day, claiming a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-15) sweep over the Marietta Pioneers on Saturday afternoon at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The sweep marked the fifth for the Blue Streaks this season and second in Ohio Athletic Conference play.

The senior class consisting of Anna Coughlin, Ally Bartolone, Cassi Calamunci, Carleen Ellerbruch, Kailee Herbst and Brooke Hjerpe contributed immensely to the victory.

Calamunci led the team in offense with 13 kills, followed by Hjerpe and Herbst with eight and seven kills, respectively. Bartolone finished the sweep with 22 assists on the afternoon.

Set 1
In the first set, the Blue Streaks and Marietta started out exchanging serves, point for point. After being tied up 7-7, the Blue Streaks began to pull away after scoring six consecutive points, giving the Blue and Gold a 12-7 advantage forcing the Pioneers to take a timeout.

The Blue Streaks maintained their lead for the rest of the set one, lifting them to a 25-18 victory over the Pioneers after a kill by Ellerbruch.

Set 2
Marietta came out with momentum in the second set battling back and forth with the Blue Streaks once again. Like the first set, John Carroll began to pull away, going on a three-point-scoring streak, resulting in a Marietta timeout.

After the timeout, John Carroll continued to expand their lead after a 4-point scoring streak, giving them a 16-10 lead. John Carroll finished the set 25-18, with the winning kill coming from Herbst.

Set 3
Going into set three, Marietta hoped to extend the game for another set. Marietta began with two consecutive kills, but shortly after, the Blue Streaks took charge and never looked back after capturing their first lead of the set (5-4).

John Carroll continued with the high-pressure offense, lifting them up 12-6. Marietta battled back, tightening the score within three. Ultimately, the Blue and Gold claimed their biggest victory of the afternoon in set three with a 10 point advantage (25-15).

John Carroll's defense was led by Lexi MacDonald with 13 digs, Calamunci (12) and Bartolone (11).

"It was really awesome," said Bartolone, who plans to return next year while pursuing her Master's degree. "I'm super excited for us to get a win on senior day. I love John Carroll, I wouldn't be staying for a fifth year if I didn't."

With the win, the Blue Streaks improve to 12-14. John Carroll will take the court for the final time at home this season at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Wednesday, Oct. 27 against Heidelberg University.  The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
