Men's Soccer Settles for Draw at Marietta in OAC Title Bout Rematch

MARIETTA, Ohio -- A rematch of last spring's Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Championship was sure to offer plenty of intrigue.

The match did not offer any goals, but it did include plenty of intense action and good play.

The Blue Streaks walked away from Marietta with a 0-0 tie, remaining undefeated in OAC play. The Blue & Gold now have a record of 8-3-4 on the season.

The game opened with much fanfare, as the Pioneers celebrated both Homecoming and Senior Night.

The game itself did not open with as much excitement. The teams did not manage a shot or a shot on goal until the 14th minute. Reggie Grayek tested Connor Robinson on Marietta's first show of the evening, and Robinson turned it away with ease.

Jared Ianiro provided JCU's opening shot in the 17th minute. Ryan Riccillo provided the answer with a save to keep things even.

Marietta responded with a shot in the 20th minute, but it missed the net. Despite a number of subs and a Hayden Haffer shot, things stood level after the first half.

The Blue Streaks opened the half with a pair of shots, though neither made it on net. In the 57th minute, Benjamin Hryszko drew a yellow card, the first of the game for JCU.

The 58th minute was marked by several Marietta shots, though Robinson didn't need to make any saves. Another Pioneer tabbed a shot in the 62nd minute.

Justin LaFountain pressured Marietta with a shot in the 65th minute, but just missed right. Nicholas Graeca also recorded a shot in the 68th minute, but it also did not make it on net. Graeca did get one on net in the 77th minute, but Riccillo stood strong.

Marietta looked to have a dangerous chance with ten minutes left in regulation, with a free kick not far outside the box. But thankfully, the chance did not result in a goal as the rain fell onto the purple turf.

Robinson notched a huge save and then JCU cleared a great chance for the Pioneers in the 84th minute. As play got more physical, Ianiro got a yellow card in the 85th minute. Marietta pressured JCU in the next few minutes but the visitors didn't budge.

The Blue Streaks tabbed a corner kick with about a minute on the clock, but then the Pioneers countered, drawing a corner with about 15 seconds left. Marietta's set piece looked dangerous, but Robinson made a last second save to force overtime.

Hryszko managed a shot early in OT, but it missed wide. Marietta got a free kick in the 96th minute, setting up a shot that sailed high. Marietta got another free kick a few minutes later, blasting it into the box only for JCU to clear.

John Carroll earned a pair of corner kicks in the final couple minutes, but neither proved successful. The score remained at nil-nil entering the second overtime.

The second overtime featured plenty of intrigue, but no shots. Anticipation filled the air, but neither team could strike for the 3 points.

Instead, JCU settled for a 0-0 tie, still a solid result against a very good Marietta team.

Looking at the overall stats, JCU and Marietta were quite even in shots, with the Pioneers having a slight edge, 10-9 in shots, and 3-2 in shots on goal. Robinson made 3 saves in 110 minutes of action. Hayden Haffner, Stephen Schutt, and Will Turrittin also played the whole match.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action in the penultimate game of the regular season on Wednesday. Heidelberg will play host to JCU in a 4 p.m. Wednesday matinee.
