Men's Soccer Triumphs over Ohio Northern With a Golden Goal on a Rainy Night

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Great moments are born from great opportunity.

Tied 1-1 in the first overtime against the Ohio Northern Polar Bears, the John Carroll University Men's Soccer Team capitalized on a great opportunity.

Off a tremendous pass from Nicholas Graeca, Benjamin Hryszko fought for possession, spun around, and kicked in the winning goal into the lower right corner of the net giving the Blue Streaks a 2-1 victory, staying undefeated in OAC play.

"We are very proud of Benny for coming through in a clutch moment," Blue Streak head coach Dejan Mladenovic said.  "He is one of our most talented and experienced veterans and someone we can rely on in situations like tonight."

Despite the cold, rainy weather, and down their senior center back Chase Fernkorn, the Blue Streaks battled all night long.

"We faced adversity with the weather," Mladenovic expressed. "Our guys dug deep, kept fighting, and deserved the win."

Starting off the match, John Carroll fell behind early as the Polar Bears' Noah Zebrak found the back of the net in the 17th minute off an assist from Levi King, giving Ohio Northern the 1-0 advantage.

The Blue Streaks' Jared Ianiro nearly tied the match up in the 35th minute, taking a shot that went past goalkeeper John Lombardo, but was headed out by a Polar Bear defender to keep JCU scoreless headed into halftime.

Coming out of half, John Carroll dominated possession, and eventually was rewarded with a Graeca goal on an assist by Hryszko to even the score at 1-1 in the 76th minute.

The Blue Streaks continued to attack offensively, but could not find the back of the net as they registered five shots in the final fourteen minutes.

It was much of the same for JCU in overtime, as they outshot Ohio Northern 4-0 in the period, ending with Hryszko's epic game winner.

For the match, JCU outshot ONU 28-10 while Connor Robinson finished with five saves for the Blue Streaks. Reigning OAC Goalkeeper of the Year Lombardo had six saves, which tied for a season high.

Heading into the final stretch of the season, John Carroll (7-3-3) will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 20 against Baldwin Wallace in University Heights.

"Now that we are over the halfway point in the OAC, I feel like we are hitting our stride," Mladenovic added.  "We are playing our best version of JCU soccer."
