Volleyball Splits Opening Matches of Elmhurst Tournament

ELMHURST, Ill. -- With a win in the backend of a twinbill on Friday evening, John Carroll University Volleyball emerged from a bit of a funk.

Entering the Elmhurst University Tournament, the Blue Streaks had lost four straight and eight of nine matches. The Blue Streaks have played well in spurts, but have been searching for that consistency. The team has shown excellent potential but has been looking to put it all together.

This weekend's tournament outside of Chicago could be the perfect chance for the team to come together, as the Blue Streaks showed on Friday.

The Blue Streaks earned a victory over Augustana College (Ill.) in the second match after an opening loss to Coe College (IA) in the opener.

Match 1 vs. Coe: 22-25, 20-25, 19-25

Going against a tough Coe team, the Blue Streaks hung tough in the early going. The Kohawks had to claw back into it after JCU took leads of 13-10 and 20-17.

Coe's killer instinct took over in the first set with a 6-0 run, reversing things to the tune of a 23-20 lead. The Kohawks finished things off with a couple more points in the final goings, earning the 25-22 win. Despite the tough ending, JCU played very well early on in the opener.

The second set again saw very even play. The Blue Streaks sat on a 12-10 lead before Coe again went on the warpath. This time, it was a 7-0 run that doomed the Blue and Gold. A kill by Abigail Kirk and a Cassi Calamunci/Carleen Ellerbruch block allowed JCU to get back into it at 20-19. But a pair of service aces against and a service error by JCU allowed Coe to sneak away with the set win.

For the third straight set, the open was even, with JCU playing to an 11-11 tie. Coe went on a mini run with 3 consecutive points, but JCU kept it within one until late. Ahead 19-18, Coe won six of the next seven, showcasing killer instinct for the victory.

Looking at the stats for the match, Calamunci led the team with 11 kills. Ally Bartolone tabbed 21 assists. Anna Coughlin topped the team with 16 digs.

Match 2 vs. Augustana : 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-18

The Blue Streaks allowed an early runner to Augustana in the first set, as the Vikings galloped to a 6-0 run to leap to a 9-6 lead. After chipping away, JCU broke the dam with a 4-point run, highlighted by a pair of Calamunci kills, to roll to 14-12.

But like the first three sets of the evening, John Carroll scuffled down the stretch. Augustana managed to do enough to put JCU away, for a 25-21 conquest.

The second set was a dead heat. JCU and Augustana traded points, never going on much of a run. It took until late for one team to find clear momentum, and it was JCU. The University Heights warriors earned a 4-0 run to snag the energy late, pushing for a 25-21 win.

Strong play upfront keyed a hot start in the third set, with kills by six different Blue Streaks paving the way to a 10-5 advantage. Augustana never made up the ground, as JCU found its own killer instinct, preventing the Vikings from getting back into it, securing the 25-19 conquest.

Sensing a win at hand, JCU didn't stray from the task late. Bartolone, Kailee Herbst, and Calamunci recorded kills for a 4-0 lead, defining the set. The Vikings enjoyed their stretches, too, but never got the set tied. JCU rolled to a 7-point run, which Augustana countered with a 6-point run. But JCU's veterans stepped up late, preserving the triumph.

On the stat sheet, Bartolone stood out the most, with an impressive 41 assists. Herbst (19) and Calamunci (17) led the efforts up front in kills. Lexi MacDonald (15) and Anna Coughlin (11) anchored the defensive with good dig numbers.
