Uphill Climb Falls Two Goals Short For JCU Women's Lacrosse

John Carroll came into tonight's match against Oberlin second in the nation for scoring with an average of 22 goals scored per game.

Oberlin, however, found a way to slow down the Blue Streaks potent offense, holding JCU to its lowest amount of goals scored this season in a single game -- 17.

As a result, John Carroll suffered its second loss of the season, falling to the host Yeowomen, 19-17.

The culprit? A slow start.

At numerous times, John Carroll came within one goal of tying the game. But the all game uphill climb never reached the summit as JCU was unable to tie the game or take a lead over Oberlin at any time throughout the whole game.

John Carroll started the game off with an unfortunate scenario -- a Kaleigh Kotula handling mishap in the goal, which caused the ball to go in the net for an early Oberlin goal. Oberlin's Annie Payne was credited with the own goal. Just 32 seconds later, Payne found the back of the net giving the Yeowomen a 2-0 lead.

Jenna Ginsberg put John Carroll on the board at the 23:27 mark in the first half.

Oberlin continued to build upon their lead and in response, John Carroll made an early goalie switch by putting in freshman Maddie Mundig. Oberlin led 7-2 with 11 minutes to play in the half.

Soon, JCU's attempted comeback began via three rookies. Three consecutive John Carroll goals by Olivia Gerlach, Kendall Gessner, and Shannon Burdick moved the Blue Streaks to a two-goal deficit, with Oberlin leading, 7-5.

Colleen Grombola tallied her second goal of the day with 4:11 remaining in the first half making the score, 9-6.

The last few seconds of the half was filled with momentum for the Blue Streaks. Grombala scored her third goal of the game with 18 seconds remaining. Exactly ten seconds later, Burdick found the back of the net putting the Blue Streaks within two goals at halftime with Oberlin leading, 10-8.

John Carroll continued to push for a comeback after halftime. Lainey Donaldson scored her first goal of the day, followed by Alex Heishman. With 19 minutes left in the game, Ginsberg had a hat trick tallying her third goal of the day, which put the Blue Streaks one goal behind Oberlin at 13-12.

Oberlin's Payne, continued to crack through the John Carroll defense in the second half. Payne tallied her eight goal of the night giving Oberlin a 14-12 lead. The Yeowomen continued to build upon their lead scoring four goals within 71 seconds making the score 17-12 with 16:20 left in the second half.

Another comeback attempt came for the Blue Streaks when they cut the Oberlin lead after goals scored by Gerlach, Heishman and Gessner. Carly Ross scored her first goal of the night putting the Blue Streaks within one goal (17-16) for the second time of the half.

Alex Heishman gave John Carroll yet another opportunity to tie the game making the score 18-17 with 8:52 remaining.

The scoring for both teams slowed down for the remainder of the game. The next goal came from Oberlin with 4:39 left in the game lifting them 19-17 over JCU.

John Carroll's final attempt came from Ross on a free position shot. Ross was unable to find the back of the net and Miranda Phillips came away with a huge save for Oberlin. Phillips had 12 saves in the contest.

Ginsberg, Grombola, and Heishman led the Blue Streaks offense all coming away with an individual hat trick in the match. Ginsberg and Gessner led the team in steals with six each. Gessner also led the team with four ground balls.

John Carroll returns home for their next game on Wednesday, March 18, at 7:00 pm. The match will take place at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights, Ohio.
