Coming off of a close loss against Kenyon last Saturday, John Carroll came out ready to win today.
Regardless of where the game was played, outside or inside.
The choice was the latter Wednesday evening, as the lacrosse match between visiting John Carroll and host Wittenberg was moved indoors to The Steemer, the centerpiece of Wittenberg University's Health, Wellness & Athletics Complex.
The Blue Streaks did not seem to mind, scoring 25 goals, including 14 in the first half, to defeat the Tigers, 25-12.
Wittenberg was first to score, but freshman
Kendall Gessner and senior
Colleen Grombala answered quickly with two goals within a minute and ten seconds afterward.
With an additional two goals from Grombala, two each from
Emma Workman and
Mary Doherty and one from
Carly Ross, the Blue Streaks earned themselves a 9-4 advantage with 16 minutes left in the first half.
John Carroll held Wittenberg scoreless for the next four minutes.Â
The teams went back and forth for the last twelve minutes, ending with a 14-8 score in favor of JCU at half.
John Carroll started out the second half with two goals tallied within the first minute by Ross and Gessner.
The strong defense and amazing work in the net by
Maddie Munding held the Tigers to just four goals in the second half. The offense went on to score nine more goals for its largest offensive output since scoring 26 against Ohio Northern on April 21, 2018.
The Blue Streaks outflanked the Tigers, 21-18, in draw controls and 15-10 in ground balls.Â
Grombala, Workman, Doherty, and Gessner all secured hat tricks.
Molly Carroll led the team with four ground balls.
Alex Heishman had three caused turnovers and Carroll added two.
In draw controls, Grombala (8) and Doherty (6) combined for 14 of the 21 JCU wins.
John Carroll, now 1-1 overall, is heading to Clearwater, Florida, for their spring break trip next week. Wittenberg drops to 0-3 with the loss.
